East Main Street maple coming down today
Updated on: 10.04.12

East Main Street between Locust Lane and Commercial Drive is closed today while Stinson's Tree Service takes down an approximately 100-year-old silver maple tree.

Bruce Gould, president of the Nashville Tree Board, owns the East Main home where the tree towers over the street. He was mowing the lawn of his next-door Cornerstone Cottages Thursday, watching as massive limbs were cut away.

About three weeks ago, during a Friday night storm, one of those 500-to 600-pound limbs came down in the yard, landing on a concrete retaining wall and missing the house by no more than 2 feet. It was hollow inside, Gould said. And with several more limbs arching directly over the house and over Main Street, he knew he had to take the tree down.

Gould, Nashville's former postmaster, has admired the tree for years. He watched it grow from Peter Grant's across the street, when the gallery used to be the post office.

"I hated to see it," he said about the tree's deterioration. "I'd always prayed that tree would outlive me."

Parts of it will, though. Gould has given the wood to chainsaw sculptor Rick Nasby, of the Chainsaw Cowboys, who works outside the Brown County IGA. Nasby plans to carve a horse out of it, Gould said. The trunk likely will stand until winter, when Nasby will remove it, Gould said.
