Brown County Schools has confirmed that 13 students are homeless, but school administrators estimate there are more than that.

All are welcome to share ideas about how to help them at the first gathering of the Homeless Teen Task Force. It will start at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Creekside Retreat (the former Creekside Apartments and Wabash Apartments) on State Road 46 East.

Homelessness is defined by the federal government as lacking a “fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.”

It includes children sharing the housing of friends or relatives due to loss of housing or economic hardship; living in hotels, motels or campgrounds or in shelters; abandoned in hospitals; awaiting foster care placement; living in cars, parks, substandard housing, abandoned buildings, bus or train stations or similar settings; migratory children; and unaccompanied youth not living with their parents for any reason.

All homeless students are automatically eligible to receive a variety of assistance. If someone you know is homeless with children, contact Director of Student Services Alan Kosinski at 812-988-6601, ext. 1108 or [email protected]. All calls are confidential.
