Business owners could get tax exemption

A change in state law makes some local business owners eligible for a tax exemption on up to $20,000 of business personal property.

The applicant’s total business personal property must have been bought for less than $20,000, Brown County Assessor Mari Miller said.

If the property was bought for significantly less than its actual value — such as a business being bought from a family member — the purchaser might not be eligible for the exemption, Miller said.

Questions can be directed to the assessor’s office at 812-988-5466.

Business owners have until Sunday, May 15 to file the necessary paperwork with Miller’s office, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Applicants must also file a notarized certificate with Miller’s office before May 15.

Forms are available at the auditor’s office on the first floor of the County Office Building, 201 N. Locust Lane, or online at in.gov/dlgf/7576.htm or under the assessor’s section of browncounty-in.gov.
