JACKSON TWP. — Three people have been charged with drug possession and maintaining a common nuisance after police raided two Carmel Ridge Road homes in February.
Two teams of officers from the Brown County Sheriff’s Department, the Indiana State Police and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration served warrants at two homes in the 7400 block of Carmel Ridge Road on Feb. 9. Charges were filed April 13.
Brown County Sheriff Scott Southerland, Chief Deputy Mike Morris, Cpt. Brad Stogsdill, Sgt. Mike Moore and DEA task force officer Gary Nichols searched the first home after a package they believed to contain controlled substances was delivered from Thailand.
Special Agent DeMarcus Calhoun, a U.S. Postal Inspector with the DEA, drove the U.S. Postal vehicle.
Leah J. Wagers, 28, accepted and signed for the package on behalf of Dwayne D. Bailey Jr., 37, according to a probable cause affidavit by Morris.
Then, police searched the home.
Wagers and a child were the only people there, the report said. Wagers inquired about the reason behind the search, and after she was told it was because of “something bad in the mail,” she called Bailey.
The package contained steroids, the report said.
In Wagers’ purse, police reported finding marijuana, a prescription drug classified as a Schedule III controlled substance, and drug paraphernalia.
She was arrested, and the child was released to a relative.
When Bailey returned to the home, he was arrested, too.
A few minutes later, a second team of officers served a warrant on a home across the street.
Five people were there. Officers reported smelling marijuana on all of them and that the home smelled of it, too. Police reported finding a glass jar containing raw marijuana.
All five “made comments that they weren’t doing heroin or meth; they were just smoking pot, and the officers should get the hard drug users,” the report said.
A computer in a back room showed a money transfer on the screen for the steroids that were delivered to the first home, the report said.
The people in the home said that “Uncle Doug” had used the computer to order something, according to the affidavit. Police identified “Uncle Doug” as Bailey.
In the second home, police also reported finding four loaded handguns and $1,280 in cash.
Charges were filed April 13 against Bailey, Wagers and William V. Bryant Sr., 49. Bryant was among the five people at the second home.
The others mentioned in the report had not been charged as of press time.
Bryant was charged with dealing in marijuana, a Level 6 felony; maintaining a common nuisance, a Level 6 felony; and possession of marijuana, a Class C misdemeanor.
Bailey was charged with dealing in a Schedule III controlled substance, a Level 2 felony; maintaining a common nuisance, a Level 6 felony; and possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor.
Wagers was charged with maintaining a common nuisance, a Level 6 felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor; possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
