Deputies graduate from state academy

Three Brown County Sheriff’s deputies recently graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and one received a special award.

Jackson also received the Herman H. Freed Award after his classmates voted him as the best officer who represents principles, integrity, loyalty, ethics and attitude.

The course includes more than 600 hours of training on topics such as criminal and traffic law, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, physical tactics, emergency medical awareness and human behavior.

Officers also receive instruction in accident investigation, criminal investigation, domestic violence and sexual assault, water rescue training, field sobriety tests, crime prevention and drugs.

Academy graduates also must meet minimum physical standards, including making a 16-inch vertical jump, doing at least 29 sit-ups in a minute, running 300 meters in less than 71 seconds, doing 25 pushups and running 1.5 miles in less than 16 minutes, 28 seconds.

Jackson received the Herman H. Freed Award after his classmates voted him as the officer who best represents the principles of integrity, loyalty, ethics and attitude, reported Sheriff Scott Southerland.

Southerland said he was “extremely proud of all three of the new deputies and knows the future of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office is in good hands.”

Students named to dean’s list at Olivet

BOURBONNAIS, Illinois — Olivet Nazarene University named three area students to the dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester: Emily Brown and Kari Brown, both of Freetown; and Elizabeth Jackson of Nineveh.

To qualify, a student must have earned a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
