Make jewelry at state park Nature Center

From April to July, artist-in-residence Amy Greely will lead jewelry-making workshops from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. one Saturday per month at Brown County State Park’s Nature Center. Workshop dates are May 6, June 24 and July 15.

Part of an Arts in the Parks grant, the workshops include a 10 a.m. hike to explore the understory of the forest floor to provide inspiration.

Two artists featured at art guild during May

Wayne Campbell of Shelbyville and Corrine Hull of Indianapolis have been named featured artists for May at the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St.

Campbell, who uses oils, acrylics and pastels, will demonstrate drawing from a model from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 6.

Hull, who paints with oils and pastels, will do a painting demonstration from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 13. A reception for both artists will follow from 5 to 8 p.m. at the guild.

All events are free and open to the public.

Campbell won his first competition at age 12 during the Scott County Fair with a portrait of Jesus. Mostly self-taught, he has taken a variety of instructional workshops from Indiana artists. His passion is plein air painting. He became a guild member in 2016.

Originally from Richmond, Hull took her first painting class at age 7. She enjoys the spontaneity of plein air painting but also enjoys painting with friends and colleagues at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. Hull has been a member of the guild since 2011.

Spring art activities set at park, historic site

Brown County State Park and T.C. Steele State Historic Site have several spring programs planned with art and music. They include:

  • Sunday, May 7 — 1 to 4 p.m. at Kelp playground, Brown County State Park, Bartels will paint the creek; gate fee applies.
  • Saturday, May 13 — 1 to 4 p.m. at the T.C. Steele site, Betty Wagoner will conduct a watercolor workshop painting historic buildings; registration required, limit of 14, free with standard admission.
  • Sunday, May 14 — 1 to 4 p.m. at Hohen Point vista in Brown County State Park, Bartels will paint the panorama; gate fee applies. On May 7 and 14, up to 12 youth ages 5 to 16 can paint along with Bartels, who is a former junior high art teacher. Basic materials will be provided.
  • Saturday, May 20 — 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at T.C. Steele site, the Festival of Flowers Paint-out will include a dedication ceremony in the formal garden for the historic marker at 2 p.m.

Gallery, studio grand opening in May

Nashville artist Anabel Hopkins has opened a new gallery and studio at the intersection of Honeysuckle Lane and Old Hickory Lane, in the Tuckaway Building north of Antique Alley. A grand opening will be celebrated the weekend of May 12 to 14, from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Anabel Hopkins Fine Art includes contemporary abstract, traditional landscapes and a new series of southwest art from northern New Mexico. The building also houses a studio to be shared with oil painters Ellen Cramer and Rose Bremer. Their work and that of local art quilter Daren Redman will be displayed.

Regular hours likely will be noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays and other days to be determined, increasing as the season progresses.

Dance workshop planned in state park

Windfall Dancers will host a multi-generational dance workshop at Brown County State Park’s Nature Center at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13.

Part of an Arts in the Parks grant, the workshop will explore the natural beauty and individuality of the state park and incorporate those qualities into creative movement.

Festival of Flowers Paint-out planned in May

BELMONT — The 18th annual Festival of Flowers PaintOut, a plein air art competition for established and beginning adult and child artists, will take place Saturday, May 20, at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

Artists can work from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic site or anywhere in Brown County. Three judges will choose winners in six categories: oil, acrylic, watercolor, drawing, mixed media/other and teen/child. First-place and People’s Choice winners will display their work in a downtown Nashville gallery.

Brozinni’s Pizzeria will have lunches for sale. Parking is $3 for non-artists.

Registration is required and discounts are available to those who register during April. Regular registration rates apply in May; day-of registration is available on site. Registration materials can be downloaded from tcsteele.org/programs beginning in April.

Weave-in, Spin-in planned monthly at library

Weavers and spinners of all skill levels can bring looms, spindles and wheels to the Brown County Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 20.

Weaving and spinning experts and beginners are welcome to ask questions and to share projects and ideas at the free event.

Indiana Heritage Arts exhibit seeks works

Indiana Heritage Arts of Nashville is seeking Hoosier artists to enter its 39th annual exhibition and sale, which begins Saturday, June 10.

Artists may submit up to three works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, chalk and a variety of techniques. All works must be two-dimensional.

The entry deadline is Saturday, May 20. Take-in day for artwork is Sunday, June 4 at the Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive.

Artists will compete for some $20,000 in prize money plus the opportunity to sell their work during the monthlong show. Admission to see the show is free. Hours are Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m.

The public will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite painting. The People’s Choice winner receives $500.

In 2016, 76 artists were juried into the show. More than 130 works will be hung in this year’s show. Lori Putnam of Nashville, Tennessee, will be the show’s judge.

IHA promotes the tradition of plein air painting begun in the 1890s by the group called the Brown County School.

Paint a wine glass at Brown County winery

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 21, Brown County Winery, 4520 State Road 46 East will join Poka Dotz glass company to offer Paint by the Glass classes.

Applications are being accepted for the 19th annual Back Roads of Brown County studio tour. A juried event, the October tour is founded and produced by local artists.

Annual art gallery meeting planned

At 10 a.m. Thursday, May 25, the Brown County Art Gallery on Artist Drive will conduct its annual meeting. The agenda includes nominations and election of board members, report on 2016 events, review of the board’s actions last year and other business. All are welcome.

Back Roads of Brown County tours scheduled

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during October, 24 artists will open their studios to the public in 15 locations around Brown County.

Visitors can meet artists, watch them work, explore their studios and buy a variety of handmade work directly from artists.
