Brown County Habitat building 20th home; volunteers welcome

Volunteers for Habitat for Humanity in Brown County are excited to be building their 20th house this year for Katy Mulryan, who moved to Brown County from Indianapolis when she was just a year old.

Katy and all of her siblings — five brothers and one sister — graduated from Brown County High School, Katy in 1998. They grew up in the house her late father, Tom Mulryan, built for his large family on Oak Ridge Road where her mother, Pat, who is the nurse at Brown County Junior High, still resides.

Katy graduated from Ball State University and has been teaching special education at Brown County Intermediate School. She has two boys who are excited about their new home. Aiden, 9, is in the fourth grade at Helmsburg Elementary and loves race cars and reading. Conor, age 5, is in kindergarten at Helmsburg.

The family stays active with sports and outdoor activities at Brown County State Park.

“We are so happy to welcome Katy Mulryan and Aiden and Conor Miller to the Brown County Habitat family, where Habitat builds homes and community while helping build lives,” Habitat public relations committee member Mark Thompson said in a press release.

An official introduction of the family will take place at the Brown County Community Band concert Saturday, May 13. The “Dancing with the Band” concert will be performed at the Brown County High School auditorium starting at 7 p.m.

During intermission, the 2017 Habitat Volunteer of the Year also will be announced.

Construction on the home is beginning, with Dan Johnson as construction manager plus Jim Drum and Bill Walters as construction committee co-chairs to coordinate the efforts.

Habitat needs volunteers. “Even if you do not know one end of the hammer from the other, there are countless ways you can help,” Thompson said.
