Yard sale to take place at Morgantown church
MORGANTOWN — Gospel Lighthouse Assembly of God, 340 N. Hoosier St. at Sycamore and Hoosier streets, will host a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 18 and 19; and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 20.
Practical history sessions for children planned
The Brown County Historical Society’s children’s program, Hands on History, is offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays, May 18, June 15, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 14 and Oct. 19. Programs are geared for ages 8 to 12.
Registration is required and the fee is $5 per child, per program.
Topics vary each session; they include nature study, early transportation, Native Americans of Brown County, pioneer household chores, one-room school days and harvest.

Bean Blossom market sells meats, produce
BEAN BLOSSOM — On Friday, May 19, the Bean Blossom Farmers Market will welcome community favorite Don Ford singing rock ‘n’ roll. Lisa Smith will teach the basics of American Sign Language.
The market is open from 4 to 7 p.m. Fridays in the parking lot of St. David’s Episcopal Church at state roads 45 and 135.
Vendor of the day will be Ram Family Farms of Martinsville, which raises antibiotic-free pork. Smoked pork chops, pork roasts and several kinds of special recipe sausage will be for sale.
In the Community Children’s Garden, Alyssa Besser from the Brown County Purdue Extension Service will speak about “Pollinators: Birds, Bats and More.” All are welcome to the free program.

Training for suicide prevention, awareness planned
From 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 20, Nashville United Methodist Church, 36 S. Jefferson St., will offer safeTALK Training.
SafeTALK is a half-day session designed to prepare participants older than 15 to become suicide-alert helpers. Participants learn to recognize invitations for help that are often overlooked; use the TALK steps; and connect a person who’s having thoughts of suicide to community resources.

Lifeguard training offered by YMCA
American Red Cross lifeguard training is offered for responsible teens and adults age 15 and older who can swim 300 yards continuously.
The classroom portion, which takes about 12 hours to complete online, must be finished by Friday, May 19. A link will be sent via email.
Skills testing at the Brown County YMCA is from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20. The class is free for anyone committing to work at the YMCA for a minimum of four months.

‘American Pickers’ series to film in Indiana
“American Pickers” plans to film throughout Indiana in June and the show’s producers are looking for properties to visit.
The documentary/reality show explores the world of antique “picking.” The show follows two men who hunt for valuable antiques in private collections that may be housed in people’s barns, antique stores, businesses or homes. They look for sizeable, unique collections and learn the stories behind them.

Health department offers CPR/AED training
The Brown County Health Department is offering training for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator. The class, Heartsaver CPR/AED, is not for businesses; it is only for individuals.
Class will start at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 19 in the Salmon Room of the County Office Building, 201 Locust Lane. The $7 cost, due prior to training, pays for the certification card. Payment can be made at the health department.

Firefighters plan fish fries, boot drive
BEAN BLOSSOM — The Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Company, 5200 State Road 135 North, will host fish fries from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 20 and June 10.
For $9, diners can get meals including tenderloins “as big as your head,” hot dogs, french fries, onion rings, beverages, fish and fish sandwiches.
Firefighters will collect contributions during a “boot drive” at the intersection of state roads 45 and 135 North on Sunday, May 28.

STONE HEAD — From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday in May, Van Buren firefighters will sell sandwiches, chips and a drink for $5.

State park hosts live raptor program
Brown County State Park is hosting live bird shows with representatives from the Indiana Raptor Center through fall.
Starting at 2 p.m., Saturday shows at the Nature Center include May 20, each Saturday in June and July, and Oct. 7, 14 and 21.
Shows at Abe Martin Lodge begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 28, Monday, July 3, Saturday, Sept. 2, and Friday, Nov. 24.
The presentations are included with park admission.

Dawg Gone Walk and Fiesta is this Sunday
From 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 21, the Brown County Humane Society will host its annual fundraiser, the Dawg Gone Walk & Fiesta, at Deer Run Park.
Tickets cost $20 per dog; human admission is free.
All dogs must be leashed and current on vaccinations. Dogs must get along with other dogs and people.
Contests and games, for dogs of all sizes and abilities, include: Fastest Licker, Best Kisser, Best Costume, Biggest Dog, Wet T-shirt, Best Trick, Bobbing for Hot Dogs, Fastest Fetch, Sneaker Sniffer and more. Each contest or game costs $1. The fundraiser will also have pampering stations, information booths and shopping.
Each male and female dog that raises the most money during the event will be crowned as royalty and receive a prize basket.

Automobile history exhibit opening in town
The Brown County Historical Society will host “Auto Indiana,” one of the Indiana Historical Society’s traveling exhibits through Thursday, May 25. The exhibit, which takes visitors on a ride through Indiana’s rich automotive past, is on display at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“Auto Indiana” explores the mark Indiana’s inventors and innovators such as Elwood Haynes and Ralph Teetor and automakers such as Studebaker and Duesenburg left on the industry, and vice versa.

Brown County Parks & Recreation will offer a summer day camp for kids in preschool through sixth grade from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, May 31 to Aug. 4, excluding holidays.

Muddy Roots weekender planned in June
VAN BUREN TWP. — EXplore Brown County, 2620 Valley Branch Road, will host a music festival Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3.
The fifth annual Muddy Roots spring weekender, hosted by Muddy Roots Music Recordings, is limited to 500 tickets. A mini version of the festival, the event is billed as “a family reunion or roots music company picnic.” Music will be played from noon to midnight Friday and Saturday.

A ServSafe food manager class will be offered in Nashville on Monday and Wednesday, June 5 and 7.
Each food establishment in the county is required to have a food manager on staff unless they are a nonprofit or serving only prepacked food. Certification is good for five years and is nationally recognized.
Classes will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 5 and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 7.
The cost is $125 for the class, text and test. If you have the text, the cost for the class is $50.
