‘Highly effective’ teachers to get most stipend money
Teachers who are rated “highly effective” will get 25 percent more on their state-provided stipend than teachers who are rated “effective,” starting this next school year.
The school board and the Brown County Educators Association have approved the change. It’s in response to the Indiana General Assembly changing the qualifications and the name of the teacher incentive grant.
It’s now called the teacher appreciation grant.
The amount of stipends hasn’t been approved yet.
Stipends will be distributed within 20 business days of when the grant money is given to the school corporation by the Indiana Department of Education. In past years, that has happened around December.
School board approves personnel appointments
The Brown County School Board of Trustees approved the following July 7:
- Separating Van Buren Elementary School paraprofessional Kelly Schwenk, effective immediately. This was not a termination.
- Separating BCHS counselor Katherine Janowski, effective July 31. This was not a termination.
- Separating Brown County Intermediate School special education teacher Alyson Kiser at the end of her 2016-2017 teaching contract. This was not a termination.
- Appointing VBE preschool teacher Jennifer Dunn, full-time with benefits, $15 per hour.
- Appointing BCHS second-shift custodian Audrey Shambaugh, full-time with benefits, $11 per hour, effective July 17. She is a replacement for Kathy Grabenhofer.
- Transferring Sprunica Elementary School special education paraprofessional Emily Jackson to health assistant, $12 per hour, 40 hours per week, effective Aug. 7.
- Transferring Helmsburg and Sprunica elementary art teacher, Natalie Van Zuiden, to second-grade teacher at Helmsburg. She is a replacement for Sara Draper.
- Transferring Brown County Junior High School special education teacher Rachel Hardy to BCHS Eagle Academy teacher. This is a new position.
- Transferring HES PE instructor Robert Newlin to VBE PE/art instructor, effective Aug. 7. He is a replacement for Justin Dodd.
- Transferring a morning shuttle route from Dallas Transportation to Wright Transport. The route will be from Nashville to Helmsburg at a cost of $55 per day.
- Leann Dinsmore, Luann Platt, Tammy Kesler and Jane Davis to work at Brown County High School student registration Aug. 1 and 2 at a rate of $10 per hour for 64 hours.
- Declaring a wrestling mat and 25 office chairs from the Brown County Career Resource Center as salvage. These items will be picked up and auctioned off by Christy’s of Indiana, an auction center near Greenwood. The school district will receive a portion of the funds from the auction, Superintendent Laura Hammack said.
- Selling a 2005 cargo trailer that is no longer useful to the school district.
