5 things to know this week: Christmas season kickoff; county board applications; Shop With a Cop changes and more

1. Christmas season officially starts in Brown County this weekend. The Community Tree Lighting is scheduled for Friday night, Nov. 24; the big arts and crafts fair at The Seasons Conference Center also takes place Friday and Saturday. Check the Holidays in Brown County section for details.

2. Time is running short to apply to serve on a county board. The Brown County Council’s application deadline closed Nov. 17; the Brown County Commissioners are still accepting volunteer applications until Dec. 15. Letters of interest can be sent to [email protected] or [email protected]. Letters should include background information about the applicant, contact information and which board the applicant wishes to serve on. The commissioners need to appoint residents to the following for 2018: Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Brown County Board of Health, Brown County Public Library Board, Brown County Convention and Visitors Commission, Helmsburg Regional Sewage District Board, Gnaw Bone Regional Sewage District Board, Hamblen Township Fire Protection District Board, Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals (PTABOA), Brown County Redevelopment Commission, Brown County Area Plan Commission and Brown County Board of Zoning Appeals. To learn more, call Melissa Stinson at 812-988-4901 or email [email protected].

3. Shop With a Cop won’t be happening this holiday season. Instead, the Nashville Police Department will be doing a food voucher program for families in need. The family of any child who receives a clothing voucher from the Children’s Benefit Auction will also receive a $100 food voucher. Read more about this change and how to sign up here.

4. High school boys basketball season opens Tuesday, Nov. 21 on the Eagles’ home court. The girls team has been playing for weeks and already has a 3-2 record. See the scoreboard and game calendar for more.

5. New Little Free Libraries have been added in remote parts of Brown County, thanks to the efforts of an Eagle Scout and the Brown County Literacy Coalition. Learn where to find them here.
