Raptor center requests sheets, towels

Indiana Raptor Center Inc., the bird of prey rehabilitation center in Nashville, is in need of clean, used sheets, pillowcases and towels.

Donations of these items can be dropped off at the raptor center any afternoon by appointment, as the center is closed for tours until March 1. Call 812-988-8990 for directions and to notify personnel of your arrival.

The center also accepts cash donations to help feed animals in its care.

Circus, magic shows at The Playhouse

The Brown County Playhouse will host illusionist Rich Hill’s World of Magic holiday show at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27.

The family-friendly show includes guest artists with the Crescent Circus from New Orleans performing a blend of juggling, balancing and illusion.

Teen Time meets at library Wednesdays 

Teens are welcome to hang out, play games, make crafts, talk about books and do homework during Teen Time at the Brown County Public Library, Wednesday afternoons through December. A snack is included.

Youth program meets Wednesdays at Baptist church

HAMBLEN TWP. — A program for children and teens at Unity Baptist Church begins with a meal served at 6 p.m. Wednesdays.

For children ages 4 through high school, the Word of Life program includes a singing challenge, Scripture memorization and study, socializing and games. With an emphasis on “foundational truths from the Bible,” the program meets weekly through the school year at the church, 7361 Spearsville Road.

Donate blood this month, next at Y

The American Red Cross will offer a blood donation opportunity at the Brown County YMCA from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28.

All who donate blood or platelets through Jan. 7 will receive a long-sleeved Red Cross T-shirt while supplies last.

A second blood donation opportunity offered by the Red Cross will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10 at Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East.

Young adult group meets Fridays

The Young Adult Hangout group meets at 6:30 p.m. most Friday nights for dinner, fellowship and spiritual discussion.

The group, for young adults 18 and older, is sponsored by Bean Blossom Community Church. The location varies each week; call or text to confirm the location before attending. Other social events to meet with young adults in Columbus or Bloomington also are planned.

Get discount tickets for wine fair in May

Story Inn will host the 16th annual Indiana Wine Fair from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 12. Tickets are now on sale, discounted to $45 until Jan. 1, when the cost will go up to $60.

Guests can sample and purchase wines from more than 30 vintners. A variety of food trucks and live chamber music from Indiana University School of Music will be included.

All guests will receive a souvenir Indiana Wine Fair tasting glass and Story tote bag.

New Year’s Eve events scheduled

  • For adults 21 and older, The Brown County Playhouse will show the classic movie “Sleepless in Seattle” at  4 p.m. and 7 p.m. For the movie only, tickets are $7. Hike at state park on New Year’s Day

A hike will start from the Abe Martin Lodge at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 1 to go through the original state park property, including a walk across the covered bridge. Participants can learn about early park years, then stick around for refreshments and a slideshow with historic pictures of the park.

Nature preserve stroll planned New Year’s Day

STONE HEAD — Stone Head Conservancy members will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1 for an easy stroll through the Stone Head Nature Preserve.

The public is welcome to join the walk, beginning at the House at Stone Head, 4645 Bellsville Pike. The event is free.

Waterproof boots are recommended in case of soggy conditions and for crossing Salt Creek.

Free dance lessons, open house at dance barn

To celebrate 21 years in business, Mike’s Dance Barn will host free dance lessons at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1 and have no cover charge all night. A band will start playing at 6 p.m. at the barn, 2277 State Road 46 West. Food will be sold.

Chamber sponsors holiday ‘passport’ for shoppers

The Brown County Chamber of Commerce’s holiday season “passport” program runs through Sunday, Jan. 7.

Visitors and locals can pick up a passport at a participating business (look for signs) and get them stamped with the amount spent there. When completed, passports can be dropped off at designated locations and be entered into a drawing for prizes each week. Prizes include gift certificates from participating businesses, overnight stays, entertainment and restaurant bucks.

Everyone who completes a passport will be eligible to win the grand prize of $500 cash and a Brown County getaway for two, which will be drawn at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10 on Facebook Live.

Passport holders also can vote for winners in the chamber’s holiday window/storefront decorating contest, with cash prizes and a plaque awarded.

Guided tours of Salt Creek trail offered

David Rupp, the owner of Indigo Birding Nature Tours, will lead winter morning walks down the Salt Creek Trail in January.

Guided walks are offered from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 and Monday, Jan. 15. They will start with coffee and breakfast pastries at the new Brown County Visitors Center, 211 S. Van Buren St.

Each walk costs $5 per person. All ages are welcome.

Ride bus to sites for progressive dinner

A progressive dinner will take place through Nashville from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13. Transportation to each site will be provided by Nashville General Express bus, beginning and ending at the Seasons Lodge, 560 State Road 46 East.

The event costs $80. It is part of Winter in the Woods celebrations in Brown County.

Guests will board the bus at The Seasons and ride to Hard Truth Hills, Nashville’s newest distillery, then visit the Bird’s Nest Cafe at 36 W. Franklin St. for appetizers, the Artists Colony Inn for soup and salad, and back to The Seasons for a main course and two sides, followed by homemade desserts.

Try yoga at brewery during Winter in the Woods

On Sunday, Jan. 14, Winter in the Woods program participants can spend 90 minutes doing yoga with Patty Donaldson upstairs in Big Woods Village, then end the session with a pint of Big Woods beer. The session lasts from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14 and costs $20 per person.
