Letter: Participate in Great American Clean-Up

To the editor:

Keep Brown County Beautiful is holding our second Annual Great American Clean-Up, and our first Community Clean-Up will be held on April 21 beginning at 9 a.m. at our Nashville McDonald’s, our newest partner. We invite the community to join us for free coffee provided by McDonald’s and one free $1 breakfast item provided by KBCB before we start out in groups to clean litter from our Adopt A Roads, your own road or several roads chosen to be cleaned that day by Keep Brown County Beautiful.

We all recognize that litter is unsightly and deters from our overall quality of life. But did you know litter costs the United States nearly 12 billion annually? Roadway litter is caused mostly by motorists — not just by being thrown from windows which accounts for a great amount, but by unsecured loads, improperly covered cargo and often trash thrown carelessly in the back of a pickup.

Work with us to Keep Brown County Beautiful. Together we can start to win this battle by caring about how our community looks, to us and to others. It will take education and a community effort to work on the litter that is covering our roadsides. We need to instill a sense of pride in our home, in our county. Where we live is important. If we can start seeing less litter, then perhaps people will not think it is OK to litter.

We will be having two more Community Clean-Up days this year. One is tentatively scheduled for July 21 and the other for Nov. 3. McDonald’s is our partner in these Community Clean-Ups and we will meet there at 9 a.m. and they will again provide free coffee. We will have plastic gloves, grabbers and vests for your protection. McDonald’s will provide free trash bags and will provide a place to return the bags free of charge so you will not have to pay for disposal. We will have roads to clean, or you can do your Adopt a Road or your own roads.

Let’s get a community group of caring people who love Brown County sharing some time and coffee together, who get to know one another and then go out and Keep Brown County Beautiful.
