Local artists’ work selected for Statehouse display

INDIANAPOLIS — Works by three Brown County artists will soon be on display at the Statehouse.

Patricia Rhoden Bartels, Jessica Bussert and Sharon Bussert were selected to have their artwork decorate the Statehouse as part of the Hoosier Women Artists 2018 initiative. The contest was organized by Indiana Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Treasurer Kelly Mitchell and the Indiana Arts Commission.

“We have some of the most talented Indiana artists living in our community,” said Dist. 65 Rep. Chris May, R-Bedford. “I would like to congratulate Sharon, Patricia and Jessica on being recognized by the lieutenant governor. These are amazing pieces of art that will be shared with those visiting the Statehouse for the next year.”

Bartels’ work, “Grandma’s Garden,” will be displayed in Mitchell’s office.

Jessica Bussert’s work, “Fog House,” and Sharon Bussert’s work, “Waterfall at Strahl Lake,” will be displayed in Crouch’s office.

These artists and others from around the state were honored at a ceremony at the Statehouse on March 21.

The Hoosier Women Artists initiative is an annual contest recognizing the importance of the arts by showcasing drawings, paintings and photography. It’s part of a celebration of Women’s History Month in March.

Brown County artist Charlene Marsh was one of the artists chosen last year.

Artwork was judged by a panel that included Crouch, Mitchell and peer artists coordinated by the IAC.
