Club news for week of April 11

Cemetery society

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society, a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group, meets at 1 p.m. and again at 4:15 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. The next meeting was to be April 10. The public is welcome at all events.

Preservation group

Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc. will have its third annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 at the Howard F. Hughes Community Building, 209 N. Van Buren St. Mark Dollase, vice president of preservation services at Indiana Landmarks, will be the guest speaker.

This is an opportunity to learn more about the organization, offer suggestions and ask questions.

Rotary club

Jean Dayton, district fundraising chair for the Rotary Foundation, will talk about how donations are invested and distributed when the Brown County Rotary Club meets for breakfast at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, April 12 at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn.

The foundation’s major endeavor, Polio Plus, aims to eradicate polio worldwide. The foundation has pledged $50 million per year for the next three years. Donations will be matched two for one by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with other donors contributing another $750 million. Polio Plus has succeeded in reducing the number of reported cases of polio worldwide to 11 so far this year.

Members of the community are welcome to attend the meeting at 105 S. Van Buren St., especially those interested in helping with an activity or project.

Genealogical society

The Brown County Genealogical Society will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 12 at the Brown County Public Library. The meeting will feature a presentation on the Spiker family of Brown County.

Those interested in genealogical research of any type and for any location are welcome.

Widowed group

The Brown County Widowed Group will meet at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14 at the Sycamore Valley Community Center, 746 Memorial Drive at the fairgrounds.

The topic for discussion will be favorite April Fool’s stunts. Any widowed person is welcome at meetings. For more information, call Keith Bradway at 812-597-0811.

Weight-loss group

COLUMBUS — National nonprofit weight-loss group Take Off Pounds Sensibly, also known as TOPS, meets in the MainSource Bank meeting room, 2310 W. Jonathan Moore Pike. Monday meetings begin with weigh-ins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the meeting at 11:30 a.m.

Herb society

The Brown County Herb Society meets at 6:30 p.m the third Monday of each month in a lower-level meeting room at the Brown County Public Library. The next meeting will be April 16. The public is welcome.

WRAPS

The Writers, Readers and Poets Society meets from 7 to 9 p.m. first and third Thursdays each month to read and discuss the literary compositions of those present. The next meeting will be April 19 at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane. All are welcome.
