INDIANAPOLIS — Former Brown County resident Thomas Wayne Tuley is one of five journalists who will be inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in May.

The ceremony will take place Saturday, May 19 at the Indianapolis Marriott North.

A native of Evansville, Tuley started his career as a sports score-taker in high school. He was the executive sports editor of the Cincinnati Post for five years and editor of the Evansville Press.

Later, Tuley became editor and publisher of the Evansville Courier, leading the company through a transition of ownership. He also directed the design, construction and move to a new building, where the publication earned international awards for print quality.

Tuley led efforts to save a historic Evansville theater and was instrumental in campaign to build the Brown County YMCA and a Catholic church, his nomination reads.

For more than a decade, Tuley has been a leader of the Salt Creek Trail Committee in Brown County. In retirement, he has embarked on a new career as an award-winning artist.

The other inductees are Ken Armstrong, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner; Sandra Eisert; a trailblazing picture editor; Larry Hayes, an editorial page editor who spurred changes in his community; and Hilliard Gates, an award-winning sportscaster.

The executive director of the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame is Larry Taylor, who formerly led fundraising for the Brown County History Center.

Hard Truth Distilling Co.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Hard Truth Distilling Company of Brown County earned a bronze medal in the American Distilling Institute’s 2018 Judging of Craft Spirits on March 27.

ADI is a national trade organization for craft distillers. Each year, small, independently owned makers of spirits and related items submit entries for a blind taste competition. Hard Truth distillers made their first entry to the contest this year.

Hard Truth’s gin earned compliments from ADI judges on its “mouthfeel” and “ability to hold its own in a cocktail.”

The distillery intends to celebrate the award by launching GINdiana, a campaign featuring information on the the gin, the distillery, and Hard Truth Hills — the Brown County venue that will become the brand’s new home later this spring.

Founded in 2015, Hard Truth Distilling Co. is the distilling branch of BWQOHT Inc., the operating company for Big Woods Restaurants, Quaff ON! Brewing Co. and Hard Truth. The distillery’s spirits include vodka, cinnamon flavored vodka, rum and gin. A limited edition aged agave spirit was released in 2017. Aged bourbon,whiskey and rye will become available over the next several years.

Distillery products are available at Big Woods restaurants, Hard Truth Hills, and in a growing distribution area throughout Indiana.

Nashville’s Quincy Robinson is now a licensed real estate broker who will be working with Brown County Real Estate full-time.

A 2012 graduate of Brown County High School, Robinson played two years of basketball at Hanover College. He is a certified personal trainer and owner of Q’s Bikes in Brown County. Robinson enjoys exercise, travel and mountain biking.

A local representative of Modern Woodmen of America, Kristine Skaarsgard of Nashville has been named to the Woodmen’s President’s Club.

Linda Woodbury

MORGANTOWN — Linda Woodbury with Nature’s Gift LLC, has been recommended to receive a $22,500 grant from the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program for The Hoosier Harvest 365 Hospital Delivery Program.

The project, in partnership with three local farmers, will deliver vegetables and raise awareness of local foods for Hancock Regional Hospital.

The grant was awarded as part of NCR-SARE’s Farmer Rancher Grant Program, which is a competitive grants program for farmers and ranchers.
