Register for wellness golf outing this Saturday

Registration is open for the third annual Brown County government wellness program golf outing Saturday, June 23 at Salt Creek Golf Retreat. All are welcome to play.

The registration fee of $45 per player includes 18 holes, cart and meal. Prizes will be awarded for longest drive and closest to the pin. Cash prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place teams as well.

Registration also can be done between 11 a.m. at the noon “shotgun” start Saturday at the golf retreat, 2359 State Road 46 East.

Girls basketball open gyms planned

The Brown County girls basketball coaching staff will host open gyms for incoming fifth-through 12th-grade girls as follows:

  • The Brown County High School gym will be open to high school girls from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through the summer.
  • Eighth-graders are permitted during Thursday high school open gyms though July 12.
  • The junior high school gym will be open for fifth-, sixth- and seventh-graders from 10:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays, June 14 through July 12.
  • Seventh- and eighth-grade girls are also permitted at the junior high gym from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays through July 17.
  • Gyms will be closed the first week in July.

Basketball summer camps are planned July 16 to 19.

Boys basketball camp planned July 9-12

Basketball camp for incoming first- through sixth-grade boys is planned Monday through Thursday, July 9 to 12, in the Brown County High School gym.

For incoming first- and second-graders, sessions meet from 5 to 6 p.m. each evening.

For incoming third- and fourth-graders, sessions meet from 6 to 7:15 p.m.

For incoming fifth- and sixth-graders, sessions meet from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m.

Campers will be taught new skills and drills and expand their knowledge of ball handling and passing, footwork, defensive positioning, proper layup, jump shot and free throw. Older boys also will get basic team offensive and team defensive concepts. Games and competitions will be aimed at developing and practicing fundamentals as well as developing a love for the game.

All campers will receive a T-shirt and a certificate the last day. They will also have the opportunity to be recognized at halftime during a home game in the upcoming varsity season.

Registration is $25 per camper, by cash or check made to Brown County Boys Basketball.

Summer running club for youth starts in July

For incoming fifth- to eighth-grade runners, training will be offered this summer at Eagle Park by Dan and Chasity Smith. The club will work to “fine-tune form, increase endurance, strength and mental toughness.”

Runners who qualify as advanced will train from 8 to 10 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays, July 9 to Aug. 2 on trails at Brown County State Park. A park entrance pass is needed.

All runners will train from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, July 10 to Aug. 1 at Eagle Park. Help from parent volunteers is always welcome.

Fees are $30 per runner and $15 per additional sibling, due by the first day of training. Make checks payable to Dan and Chasity Smith. All money will go to USA Track and Field Brown County Pathfinders.

Girls basketball camps planned in July

From Monday, July 16 through Thursday, July 19, the Brown County High School girls basketball team will offer two basketball camps for girls in the second through eighth grades. Both are four-day camps.

The Gold camp is recommended for those entering the second to fourth grades. It features one-hour sessions each day on basketball fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and offensive/defensive footwork. Gold camp costs $25.

The Blue camp is recommended for those entering the fifth to eighth grades. It features one-and-a-half-hour sessions each day with advanced instruction in basketball fundamentals, plus an introduction to team-play concepts such as man-to-man and transition defense, dribble-drive motion offense and transition offensive. Each camper can get feedback on her shooting form and shot accuracy using the Dr. Dish shooting machine. Blue camp costs $35.

Youth golf camp planned in July

A golf camp for students currently enrolled in the fourth through eighth grades is planned from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 16 through Thursday, July 19, at Salt Creek Golf Retreat.

Parents are welcome to a lunch cookout the final day.

The registration fee, which includes the Thursday cookout, is $35. It can be paid on the first day.

State parks offering fitness challenge, prizes

The Indiana State Parks Fitness Challenge encourages visitors to walk, run, bike, paddle or swim at least 25 miles in one or more state park property this year.

Horseback riders can participate by riding at least 100 miles on state park or reservoir horse trails.

Those who complete the challenge by Nov. 30 will be entered into a drawing for prizes, including a 2019 state park entrance pass, Outdoor Indiana magazine subscriptions, DNR camping gift cards and state park inn gift certificates.

Participants must download and keep a fitness challenge log that documents their visits to state parks and get a signature from park staff each time they visit. To print the free log/entry form or get more information, visit dnr.IN.gov/healthy.

Disc golf league plays every Tuesday

The Brown County Disc Golf Alliance plays regularly in Brown County and new members are welcome.

The group plays Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at Deer Run Park or at the Brown County Country Club, alternating months. In June, it’s the park.

Players of all skill levels are welcome, including those who have never played before. Loaner discs are available.

Register for cardboard boat fundraiser

SWEETWATER — Brown County Parks and Recreation will host a cardboard regatta competition, Corrugated Chaos, Saturday morning, Sept. 22. The race will begin at 10:30 or 11 a.m., with sign-in at Sweetwater Beach beforehand.

The challenge is to design and build a boat out of corrugated cardboard, powered by one to four crew members, capable of traversing and racing a 100-yard-long course in the lake.

Awards will be given for most creative design, fastest in the county, as well as “Gilligan” (most likely to leave you stranded) and “Titanic” (most spectacular sinking) awards.

The registration deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. The cost is $10 per boat entered, or $25 per business.

Proceeds will go toward grounds upkeep and program improvements at parks and rec.

Yoga variety offered at Simply Fitness

Simply Fitness, 59 E. Main St., offers beginner yoga at 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays. The cost is $5 per 30-minute session.

Vinyasa flow yoga is taught at 6 p.m. Tuesdays for $10 per 45-minute session. Private training or yoga sessions are available for $15 per 30-minute session.

Yin/Restorative Yoga w/Annie is a 90-minute class with Annie Patrick Buechlein that starts at 6 p.m. Thursday. By reservation only, sessions cost $18 each.

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.
