Country club sets open house

The Brown County Country Club (BC3) will host an open house from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 28 at 2381 Country Club Road.

Owners, the Shively family, will be on hand to give a tour of the grounds and information about the club’s history. The Brown County Discgolf Alliance will demonstrate disc golf on the country club’s course and Jeanette Molina Catering will provide refreshments.

Market has produce, meats, baked goods

BEAN BLOSSOM — The Bean Blossom Farmers Market on Friday, June 29 will include locally grown produce as well as fresh breads, pork and beef, plants, soaps, handmade paper flower arrangements, pies, cakes, cinnamon rolls, eggs and even dog biscuits.

The market takes place in the parking lot of St. David’s Episcopal Church, at state roads 135 North and 45, from 4 to 7 p.m. each Friday through Aug. 31.

Chef Ben Smith will serve walking tacos and taco salad, made with ground beef from Gretchen Lucas of White House Farms in Morgantown. Lemon shake-ups also are sold. An air-conditioned indoor gathering place is available, with dining from menus that include vendor products.

The music wagon will feature the Weed Patch Strummers.

The community outreach booth will feature the Writers, Readers and Poets Society, also known as WRAPS. The group promotes the creative talents of local poets and authors. It meets from 7 to 9 p.m. first and third Thursdays each month at the library.

The St. David’s booth will have handmade greeting cards, jewelry and jellies.

At the outreach booth, visitors can register to give blood when the Indiana Bloodmobile visits July 20. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) tokens will will be available at the outreach booth. Market vendors accept SNAP vouchers.

The market is still seeking growers, producers, gardeners, artists, crafters and music makers to be vendors, or market volunteers for setup and parking, hosting and closing. Contra dance featured at dance barn June 29

Learn the basics of contra dance Friday night, June 29 at Mike’s Barn, 2277 State Road 46 West. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and dance instruction starts at 7 p.m.

Contra dance is similar to square dancing, as it includes a caller and moves as a group. No experience or partner are necessary.

For $6 admission, music will be provided by The New Hoosier Broadcasters (Ben Thompson, Danny Weddle and Jack Laskey) with calling by Trevor DeWitt of Louisville, Kentucky. The main contra dance begins at 8 p.m. with the last waltz at 11 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Bloomington Old Time Music and Dance Group in cooperation with the Indiana Forest Alliance.

Mike’s BBQ buffet dinner, the regular menu and bar will be available beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Touch-A-Truck fundraiser set for June 30

Children and adults can look over and learn about more than 20 trucks at the Brown County Touch-A-Truck fundraiser Saturday, June 30.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., fire trucks, a school bus, dump truck, excavator, ambulance, 1930 Austin, military truck, forklift and other vehicles will be parked in the Brown County High School parking lot. A “quiet hour” has been set aside from 10 to 11 a.m. Police, firefighters, construction workers and other community members will be available to talk about their vocation.

Firefighter hats and construction hats will be given to the first 200 children. The Boy Scouts will have a food tent.

Although the event is free, donations are welcome to support Brown County Weekend Backpack Inc., which sends backpacks of food home with local students in need each weekend.

New fire department having hog roast

STONE HEAD — The Southern Brown Volunteer Fire Department, 4040 State Road 135 South, will have an open house/meet-and-greet and hog roast from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 30. Firefighters will serve meat, potato salad, beans and slaw, tea and lemonade.

Sunday farmers market seeks more vendors

The Nashville Farmers Market is looking for more vendors. The market takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays in the parking lot at the Brown County Inn, at the corner of state roads 46 East and 135 North.

Customers have been asking for prepared food, coffee and drinks to enjoy while shopping, market organizers report. The market also still is accepting applications for vendors of honey, eggs, value-added products, bread, fine arts and other items.

Annual hog roast, new truck dedication

The Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department will host its sixth annual hog roast and dedicate its new rescue truck on Wednesday, July 4.

The dedication for the new Rescue 16 is slated from 4 to 6 p.m. The hog roast will be served from 6 to 9 p.m. Donations are welcome.

Food prices range from $9 for a meal or $1 to $4 for individual items, such as Uncle Beni’s barbecue. Sandwiches are $4.

The rain date for the event at the fire station, 231 East Main St., is Saturday, July 7.

All proceeds and donations will stay with the volunteer fire department.

Annual celebration at inn before fireworks

A Fourth of July celebration at the Brown County Inn will include music by Zion Crossroads, yard games, a bounce house, bubbles, miniature golf and an open swim.

Fireworks display planned at high school track

To celebrate Independence Day, the Brown County Lions Club will sponsor a free fireworks display at dusk Wednesday, July 4 at the Brown County High School track. Donations are welcome. The rain date is Saturday, July 7.

Comedy, music to benefit families in Guatemala

A family comedy night with comedian, musician and inspirational speaker Tony Wolf will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, July 6 at Nashville United Methodist Church.

While the entertainment at NUMC, 36 S. Jefferson St., is free, a love offering will be received for Mission Guatemala to help provide medical care and educational assistance to children and families in Panajachel, Guatemala.

Wolf also will perform for campers at Hillside Christian Camp on July 8.

Firefighters will serve fish fry July 7

BEAN BLOSSOM — The Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Company will host fish fries from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on one Saturday each month, July 7 through Oct. 6. The fire station is at 5200 State Road 135 North.

Other Saturday fish fries include Aug. 25 and Sept. 8.

The menu will include fish sandwiches, tenderloin sandwiches, french fries, onion rings, baked beans, slaw, desserts and drinks.

Sheriffs’ Youth Leadership Camp planned

JACKSON TWP. — The 39th annual Indiana Sheriffs’ Association Youth Leadership Camp will include a session at Waycross Episcopal Camp. It will begin with registration from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday, July 9 and conclude at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 11.

The camp is for boys and girls who are currently in the seventh or eighth grades and interested in learning more about a possible career in law enforcement.

“The camp provides a meaningful experience and relationship with other campers from throughout the state, as well as sheriff officers who serve as counselors and instructors,” said Bartholomew County Sheriff Matthew A. Myers.

Site will host children’s tea, hat decorating

BELMONT — A children’s mad tea party and workshop, with artist-in-residence and hatter Susan Freese, will take place Saturday, July 14 at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

The event will include tea and cookies, decorating a hat for a doll or teddy bear, and a concert by the band Daily Bread & Butter. The party will start beside the formal garden at 11 a.m. and will conclude at 12:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $8 per child with an adult and $5 per additional child. The tea party is limited to 12.

Adults can partake in the tea party or just watch the artists at work, while listening to the band perform less common instruments and traditional music from Indiana during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Litter clean-up days slated for July, November

Keep Brown County Beautiful has tentatively scheduled community clean-up days for July 21 and Nov. 3. Meet-ups will begin at 9 a.m. at McDonald’s, where free coffee will be provided.

Gloves, grabbers, vests and trash bags will be available.

An affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, KBCB seeks to educate the community about roadside litter and recycling. Projects focus on recycling, beautification, education and reducing litter.

Fair pie contest in new location this year

The Brown County Purdue Extension has put the county fair pie contest in the Exhibit Building at the fairgrounds this year.

Pie entries are due from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 31; judging starts at 6:30 p.m.

Pie categories include apple; berry; cherry; other fruit, fresh or dried; nut; and chocolate combinations. Bettys, cobblers or crisps also can be entered in a separate category, but they must be in a square pan.

Pie and ice cream will be sold after the contest, with proceeds to benefit the Brown County Extension Homemakers.

The “pie guide” and contest rules are available at the Extension office and the Brown County Public Library, and will be published in the fair preview insert in the June 27 Brown County Democrat.

The Brown County Community YMCA is offering summer day camp on weekdays through Aug. 8. Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Head Start fun fest slated for Sept. 12

Brown County Head Start will host a safety fun fest from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 in the Brown County IGA parking lot, 30 Hawthorne Drive. The event is free and open to the public.

The Indianapolis Colts Museum Bus will be there. Face painting and information resources for families will be available. Representatives will be on hand from the public library, veterans, Weekend Backpack program, local police and fire department. Register for cardboard boat fundraiser

SWEETWATER — Brown County Parks and Recreation will host a cardboard regatta competition, Corrugated Chaos, Saturday morning, Sept. 22.

The race will begin at 10:30 or 11 a.m., with sign-in at Sweetwater Beach beforehand.

The challenge is to design and build a boat out of corrugated cardboard, powered by one to four crew members, capable of traversing and racing a 100-yard-long course in the lake.

Awards will be given for most creative design, fastest in the county, as well as “Gilligan” (most likely to leave you stranded) and “Titanic” (most spectacular sinking) awards.

The registration deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. The cost is $10 per boat entered, or $25 per business.

Proceeds will go toward grounds upkeep and program improvements at parks and rec.

Seed-saving demonstration planned at market

Torrie Rae of SEED Brown County and Ben Cohen of Small House Farm in Michigan will present a seed-saving demonstration at the Sunday farmers market Oct. 7.

From noon to 2 p.m. at the Brown County Inn parking lot, 51 State Road 46 East, visitors can get lessons on processing homestead-size seed harvests. Rae and Cohen will share information about the seed library and provide plants and seeds to process. Everyone is encouraged to bring plants and seeds to process from the seeds and plants they received through Brown County SEED earlier in the year.
