Motorcycle driver flown out after three-vehicle crash

VAN BUREN TWP. — A visitor from Camby was flown to a hospital Saturday after a three-motorcycle crash on State Road 135 South.

The crash happened just before 5:30 p.m. July 7 near Orchard Road, according to an accident report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Colton Magner.

Magner had heard on his police radio on the way there that the man’s foot had possibly been “amputated” and that a tourniquet was being used. The accident report said that the injured driver, 66-year-old John Chilton, had a severe injury to his left leg and a large cut on his head.

Witnesses and another motorcycle driver involved in the crash, Jon R. Bowling, 31, of Scottsburg, told police that a southbound motorcycle driven by Christopher W. Ferrell, 45, of Indianapolis, came around the corner too fast before skidding across the center line into the northbound lane. Ferrell’s motorcycle then sideswiped Chilton’s, the report said.

Ferrell received minor injuries, including bruising and abrasions in multiple areas. He was not wearing a helmet, the report states. Ferrell also had a juvenile passenger with him who was wearing a helmet and received a minor abrasion. Bot were treated at the scene and refused further treatment, according to the accident report.

Bowling was driving north behind Chilton when the crash occurred. He said that when Chilton and Ferrell’s motorcycles collided, he was unable to stop before crashing into them. Bowling also had minor abrasions and was treated at the scene by EMS, the report said.

Chilton and Bowling were not wearing helmets, the report said.

Ferrell was taken to the hospital for a blood draw as part of the standard procedure for crashes involving seriously bodily injuries.

All three motorcycles were towed.
