Stop for obstructed plate results in arrest

An Indiana State Police trooper stopped a vehicle on June 27 for driving with an obstructed license plate and ended up arresting the passenger on a warrant.

Trooper Matthew Hatchett stopped the 2000 Dodge Durango State Road 46 East near Fair Oaks Trail just after 1 a.m. Hatchett reported that the vehicle had a tow hitch blocking the number on the license plate. The driver told Hatchett it was her uncle’s vehicle and she did not know the hitch was blocking the plate.

The passenger, Christopher I. Dill, 28, of Salt Creek Road, had a warrant for a probation violation. Hatchett searched the seat where he was sitting and found a small black pouch with two used hypodermic syringes inside, his report said. In a plastic bag, he found a burnt metal spoon with residue on it. Dill told Hatchett that he was a heroin user and that the items were his, the police report said.

The driver was issued a warning for operating a vehicle with an obstructed plate and was released.

Dill was booked into jail. He was charged June 28 with unlawful possession of a syringe, a Level 6 felony, and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
