Man, child injured in semi vs. SUV crash

Early Friday morning, a Brown County man and a 3-year-old girl were injured when their SUV collided with a semi on State Road 135 North.

The crash happened just before 5 a.m. July 20 south of the overlook on 135, according to an accident report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool.

Pool reported that the driver of the SUV, Brent Scott, 28, of Three Story Hill Road, was driving north with the 3-year-old when he lost control of his vehicle on the wet pavement. His SUV crossed the center line and stopped sideways in the middle of the road in front of a semi-tractor with no trailer.

The driver of the semi, Paul Hochsteteler, 36, of Gatesville Road, told police he was easing south down the road because he knew it was slick, and without a trailer, his rear end would break loose easily, the report states. He said he saw a vehicle cross the center line in front of him and he hit his brakes. He got over to the right side of the road “the best he could,” but he was unable to avoid a collision, the report said. The semi struck the SUV on the passenger side.

Scott received a severe concussion, but is expected to recover, Pool reported. The child was seated in the rear passenger seat. She sustained a possible broken leg and another possible fractured leg. Both Scott and the child were taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Hochsteteler was uninjured and refused medical treatment.

Both vehicles were towed. All involved were wearing seat belts.
