Police blotter for week of July 24

Driver said he swallowed drugs before being stopped

CORDRY-SWEETWATER — A Franklin man who was stopped for not having taillights had to be taken to a hospital because he told police he had swallowed methamphetamine before he was pulled over.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Jimmy Green stopped Richard D. Blaker, 35, at Center Lake Road and Bonito Drive just before 3 a.m. April 6.

Charges were officially filed against Blaker on July 12.

Green reported that he could smell alcohol on Blaker, that his speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot, he could see alcohol containers in Blaker’s vehicle, he had poor balance and he had dirty clothing. He also noted that Blaker could not stop talking during his interaction with him.

Blaker admitted to Green that he had had “several beers” and a mixed drink. He told the officer he needed more beer and that he was “a bad drunk,” the police report said. He reportedly asked Green several times to let him drink a beer that was in the front seat.

A breath test showed his blood-alcohol content to be 0.09, the report said.

While searching him, Green found a clear glass pipe in his rear pocket, the report said.

As Green was pulling away from the stop with Blaker, Blaker said that he was having an anxiety attack and he had swallowed four grams of methamphetamine before Green stopped him, the report said. Cordry-Sweetwater Ambulance was dispatched to take him to Johnson Memorial Hospital.

Blaker was charged with three misdemeanors for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of paraphernalia.

He also was wanted out of Johnson County, the report said.

Traffic stop results in drug possession charges

Police say a Bloomington man admitted to having marijuana and paraphernalia in his vehicle after he was stopped for driving left of center on May 25.

Indiana State Police Trooper Matthew Hatchett stopped Alan L. F. R. J. Taylor Jr., 23, at the Brown County State Park west gate just after 10 p.m.

Hatchett reported smelling burnt marijuana inside the vehicle. Taylor told him he did not have a valid driver’s license and that he had a small amount of marijuana and a few pipes in the center console, the police report said.

Hatchett found three glass with suspected marijuana residue inside, two to three grams of marijuana and one marijuana grinder with residue in the car, the report said.

Taylor was issued summons for driving while suspended, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. He was also issued a warning for driving left of center.

A female passenger with a valid driver’s license was able to drive the vehicle from the scene.

Taylor was charged June 28 with three misdemeanors.

Two guests arrested after dispute at state park

A Brownsburg woman was arrested for possession of a methamphetamine pipe after police responded to a dispute at the state park campground on July 5.

Brown County sheriff’s deputies and Indiana conservation officers responded to the campground just before 10:30 a.m. When ICO Joseph Tenbarge arrived, Eric Garber was sitting on a park bench in handcuffs and Beth Ballard, 40, was sitting in a vehicle speaking with a state park employee.

Lt. Mike Moore reported that the “domestic dispute” was Ballard chasing Garber around the campsite with a hairbrush, and neither of them had signs of injury.

Ballard said the two had started a journey from Indianapolis to Florida when they decided to stop at Brown County State Park. They had stayed at a Jellystone campground the night before.

She told police they did not pay for the campsite. She said they woke up that morning and began arguing about when they would leave when things became “more heated,” the police report said.

Ballard gave police consent to search their vehicle. Neither person had a valid driver’s license, so the vehicle was going to be searched before being towed, too. Ballard then told police there was a meth pipe in the back of the car and that it belonged to Garber.

Tenbarge found the pipe in the back of the car where Ballard described, as well as a new cloth bag from the Jellystone campground store, the report said.

Garber was arrested on a warrant. Brown County Tire towed the vehicle and its owner was notified.

Tenbarge contacted Jellystone Campground and was told by the manager that the couple had not paid for their night there after giving her false information. She also said the couple did not buy the bag, since their cards would not work. However, the manager did not want to press charges, the report said.

Ballard was charged July 9 with possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

A man who was clocked at driving almost double the speed limit in downtown Nashville ended up being charged with drug possession.

Ivan Deyoe, 20, of Martinsville, was driving 39 MPH in a 20 MPH zone on May 12, according to a report by Nashville Police Officer Evan Painter. When Painter approached the driver’s side window, he reported smelling marijuana. Deyoe said there was a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle and a pipe to smoke it, the report said.

Deyoe told Painter where the items were in the car. He was released from the scene with a warning for speeding and a summons to appear in court for marijuana and paraphernalia possession. On July 9, he was charged with two drug-related misdemeanors.
