Cross-country driver falls asleep, crashes

A man who was driving cross-country fell asleep at the wheel and ran off State Road 46 West in the area of Summers Place Trail early this morning, police said.

The driver, David Jackson, 77, of Ellettsville, was driving a 2016 Honda Odyssey van belonging to Curry Auto Center from Boone, North Carolina, to Bloomington, the police report said. He told Brown County Deputy Josh Stargell that the trip took him 18 to 19 hours.

A co-worker was driving behind him and told police that it appeared Jackson fell asleep, which caused him to run off the north side of the road. The crash happened just before 2 a.m.

The van was damaged on all four sides and was estimated at $10,000 to $25,000, the report said.

Jackson, who was wearing a seat belt, complained of pain to his chest, back and left hand, the report said. He was treated at the scene by EMS.

The van was towed.
