Kids on Wheels reaches fundraising goal to build skate park

Kids on Wheels has reached its goal of raising $50,000, more than two weeks before the deadline.

That means next spring, Brown County will have its own skate park.

As of today, the group had raised $51,224, parent volunteer Colleen Smith said.

The group had until Sept. 22 to raise $50,000. Since they have met their goal, they will earn a $50,000 match through the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.

The skate park will be built at Deer Run Park, just outside Nashville.

Smith said the work won’t get under way until spring because their chosen contractor already had a project this fall.

This week, a $700 donation from the Brown County Antique Mall along with $1,300 from donations and sales from the St. Agnes Catholic Church bake sale helped push the group closer to the goal.

A $5,000 grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation also is now included in that total, as well as a $5,000 grant from South Central Indiana REMC’s Operation RoundUp

At the end of August, the Town of Nashville donated $1,000. Other donations included $3,000 from a couple in Noblesville, two $2,000 donations from individuals, and other gifts ranging between $100 and $500.

In addition to a skateboarding area, the park will feature hammock swings, tire swings, picnic tables, a gaga ball pit and landscaping.

In the future, the group hopes to expand the park to include a pavilion and amphitheater, according to the fundraising website.

Kids on Wheels is still accepting donations for other aspects of the park, including accessibility features. To make a donation online, visit the group’s fundraising campaign at patronicity.com.

Kids on Wheels also is accepting donations through its Facebook page, or they can be mailed to BETA at P.O. Box 1194, Nashville, IN 47448, with “Kids on Wheels” in the memo line.
