Register for Hilly Half this week to get discount

Runners planning to get in on the 2018 Brown County Hilly Half races have until Saturday, Sept. 15 to get the early-bird rate.

The registration fee is $55 through that date, then it jumps to $75, which is more in line with other half-marathons throughout the area, said Brown County YMCA board member Brian Fenneman. He called the Hilly Half early-bird rate “kind of the deal of the world.”

The race, in its third year, will take place on the hilly, winding, paved roads of Brown County State Park on Saturday, Nov. 10. It benefits the YMCA’s scholarship program, he said.

If a half-marathon isn’t your speed, 10K and 5K options also are available for runners and walkers. The early-bird rate for the 10K is $30, and for the 5K, $25.

The route starts at the lower shelter/saddle barn area in the park and shoots uphill for the first two miles or so, Fenneman said. But after you get past that part, it’s smooth sailing with some gorgeous views, he added.

On the way back down, runners or walkers age 21 or older can choose to participate in the “beer mile” if they wish. It’s offered by Big Woods Brewing Co., which is the race’s presenting sponsor this year, Fenneman said.

Afterward, all race participants are invited to a post-race party with live entertainment, food and one free alcoholic drink in a commemorative glass.

Race registration so far is “way ahead of last year,” Fenneman said, so organizers are hopeful for a big turnout.

One change to this year’s event from the last two years is that there won’t be a kids fun run on the Thursday or Friday before the big race. That’s because the sponsorship arrangement has changed, he said.
