State Road 135 South to close in evenings

VAN BUREN TWP. — State Road 135 South will be closed overnight for two days this week while the Indiana Department of Transportation repairs a section of the road.

The worksite will be just north of Horseman’s Camp Road near mile marker 90.1, just south of Reed Hollow Road, said INDOT spokesman Harry Maginity. Part of the road has been “rutting out,” so a construction crew will excavate and pour a concrete slab, then pave over it, he said.

Work is scheduled to occur between Wednesday, Sept. 19 and Friday, Sept. 21. It will start at 7 a.m. Wednesday, weather permitting.

The road will be open during the day with flaggers on site to direct traffic, he said. But because of the amount of excavation and concrete work, the highway will need to be closed overnight, from approximately 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., he said.

Christianburg Road and Orchard Road are possible detours around the worksite. Christianburg is paved; Orchard is partly paved and partly gravel.

Two-way traffic on 135 South is expected to be restored by Friday, he said.

State Road 45 culvert to be replaced next year

A culvert may be replaced next year on State Road 45 near Indian Hill Road.

Brown County Highway Superintendent Mike Magner announced at the Sept. 6 Brown County Commissioners meeting that the Indiana Department of Transportation was proposing replacing a small culvert west of Indian Hill Road before Carmel Ridge Road.

He said that unofficially, the work would take no more than five days. Construction is expected to take place between April and June of next year.

He said he worked with INDOT to set up an unofficial detour route using the upper end of Helmsburg and Lanam Ridge roads, with INDOT paying for any damage to the roads during that time.

Due to issues with the railroad crossing and the low water slab on Indian Hill Road, the county would close that road during the culvert replacement to prevent people from using it as a detour.
