Free legal aid offered at library Oct. 2

The Brown County Public Library will host free, short, legal consultations between 3 and 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Local attorneys will volunteer their time to help with legal questions on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is sponsored by Legal Aid District 11.

Meet local candidates at forums in October

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 2, 3 and 4, voters can meet and question candidates running for election in November. All events will take place in the second-floor Salmon Room at 201 Locust Lane. The schedule is:

The events are sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Brown County. Refreshments will be provided by the Indiana Farm Bureau.

New kids club to host open house at church

A Kids Club open house for children in kindergarten through sixth grade and their families will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Rising Hope Baptist Church, 1267 Old State Road 46.

During club meetings, children can win awards for Bible memorization and participate in a wide range of projects. Activities include games and competitions as participants discover Bible truths to “build a faith foundation for life.”

Firefighters will serve fish fry Oct. 6

BEAN BLOSSOM — The Fruitdale Volunteer Fire Company will host a fish fry from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. The fire station is at 5200 State Road 135 North.

The menu will include fish sandwiches, tenderloin sandwiches, french fries, onion rings, baked beans, slaw, desserts and drinks.

Inaugural Midwest Distillers Fest slated for Oct. 6

Hard Truth Hills will host the inaugural Midwest Distillers Fest from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.

The indoor/outdoor festival will showcase the company’s newest 325-acre distilling destination in Nashville along with samples from about 30 regional distillers. The event will include live music, food, games and more. Visitors can tour Hard Truth Hills’ Welcome Center, walk around the forest, mingle with craftsmen and women, and purchase spirits to take home and/or food at the new restaurant. Multiple bars, cocktail lounges and picnic tables will be available. Outdoor music will continue until 9 p.m.

General admission tickets, $45, can be purchased online or at the gate. From 2 to 5 p.m., each ticket holder will receive 20 tasting tickets, each worth one sample, and one Hard Truth cocktail token. Four tasting tickets can be traded for any full-sized cocktail. Designated drivers, 21 and older, can enter for $10.

VIP guest passes, $55, allow entry at 1 p.m. with shorter lines, access to the VIP lounge and everything general ticket holders receive.

The Early Bird VIP Experience pass, $85, includes a bottle of Hard Truth Distilling Company cinnamon-flavored vodka. It allows entry at noon, a private tour of the distillery and property, and all that VIP guests receive.

Annual bean supper served at church

Annual farm fest happening this weekend

GNAW BONE — The annual farm fest at Kelp’s Pumpkin Patch, 6473 State Road 46 East, will happen Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 and 7.

A ham and beans dinner with cornbread will be served along with a variety of desserts. There will be a pumpkin carving contest with judging happening at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Antique tractors and farm machinery will be on display. Mums, pumpkins, squash, gourds and more will be for sale. Visitors also can watch sorghum making demonstrations, and participate in games with prizes, hay rides, face painting and a petting zoo.

Seed-saving demonstration planned at market

Torrie Rae of SEED Brown County and Ben Cohen of Small House Farm in Michigan will present a seed-saving demonstration at the Sunday farmers market Oct. 7.

From noon to 2 p.m. at the Brown County Inn parking lot, 51 State Road 46 East, visitors can get lessons on processing homestead-size seed harvests. Rae and Cohen will share information about the seed library and provide plants and seeds to process. Everyone is encouraged to bring plants and seeds to process from the seeds and plants they received through Brown County SEED earlier in the year.

Fall celebration planned at the library

The Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane, will host a fall festival in the Children’s Garden from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.

The free event will include music performed by Robbie Bowden and Carolyn Dutton, a fortune teller, free food and activities for all ages. In case of rain, the fall fest will move into the meeting rooms downstairs.

Elkinsville reunion happening this month

VAN BUREN TWP. — The Elkinsville community is invited for a reunion at Bill Miller’s farm, five miles south of Story, on Sunday, Oct. 7 with a pitch-in dinner beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Brown County Public Library is offering the following free activities:

  • 10 to 10:30 a.m. — Weekly through Oct. 9, music and movement storytime for kids 6 and younger
  • 11 a.m. to noon — Weekly through Oct. 9, family storytime with educational stories and crafts based on a weekly theme

Wednesdays

  • 3 to 4:30 p.m. — Oct. 24, Nov. 28, teen craft program and snacks.

Thursdays

  • 3 to 4 p.m. — Weekly through Oct. 11, homeschool arts and crafts for children 6 to 12 with volunteer Cassidy Sevier
  • 3 to 5 p.m. — Weekly, homework and tutoring for teens on the lower level of the library. Volunteers from the literacy coalition and library staff will be available.
  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Oct. 25, Nov. 29. Teens can discuss favorite books, get ideas and read new things. No registration needed.

  • 11:30 a.m. to noon — Weekly through Oct. 8, Bouncing Babies with singing, playing, reading and learning for children 2 and younger

Community band sets next concert in October

The Brown County Community Band rehearses under the direction of Shawn Bentz from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays in the Brown County High School band room.

Members are preparing for the next concert, “Let’s Dance!” at Nashville United Methodist Church. The free concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. Music will include concert and dance band arrangements.

The band can always use additional members, young and old.

Work group to define conservation, resource priorities

The Brown County Soil and Water Conservation District local working group will meet at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10 in the Community Room of the SWCD/Extension Office, 802 Memorial Drive at the fairgrounds.

The SWCD Board of Supervisors, in cooperation with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), will convene a local work group to review Focused Conservation Approach project plan proposals and develop local ranking questions.

The local work group includes representatives from cooperating federal, state and local agencies, conservation organizations and the public to provide localized information on natural resource priorities in Brown County. The group can define conservation needs and help in efforts to address specific resource concerns.

Pet picture day fundraiser happening in town

Bone Appetite Bakery, 211 South Van Buren Street, will host a pet picture day as a fundraiser for the Brown County Humane Society on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Church to host ice cream social with live music

HELMSBURG — Brown County Community Church, 2370 Main St. in Helmsburg, will host an ice cream social with live music at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13. The Barnett Trio is set to perform. The trio plays a combination of bluegrass, southern gospel and praise and worship music.

Charity book sale happening in town

The Brown County Literacy Coalition is having a charity book sale at the Village Green, in the area of the Nashville United Methodist Church, on Saturday, Oct. 13 and Sunday, Oct. 14. The sale begins at 10 a.m. each day.

More than 4,000 books will be for sale and 100 percent of the proceeds will be used to aid community literacy efforts. Prices will range between 50 cents and $2. Children’s and teens books, adult fiction and nonfiction, vintage books and more will be available in good to new condition. Credit cards will be accepted.

Monthly weave-in, spin-in planned at library

Teen and adult weavers and spinners, whether expert or beginner, can bring looms, spindles and wheels to the Brown County Public Library. The free program from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 20, is an opportunity to share weaving and spinning projects, ideas and to ask questions. No prior registration is needed. Christmas Bazaar planned for November

St. Agnes Catholic Church will host its 2018 Christmas Bazaar on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 3.

Items for sale will include Christmas decorations, crafts, books, jewelry and accessories, aprons, kid’s items, collectibles and paper craft products. There will also be a silent auction of gift baskets and tabletop Christmas trees.

Cookies will be available for purchase by the pound along with other baked treats. Coffee and hot tea will be available from Sweetea’s Tea Shop.

A Brown County Stars queen-sized quilt will be raffled, with the drawing at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Individuals or small groups can make an appointment with a Brown County Public Library librarian through the free Book-a-Librarian service. Christmas drive-through light show set

BEAN BLOSSOM — Bill Monroe Music Park and Campground will host Christmas at the Bean, an interactive, drive-through light show and live nativity scene. The event will run from dusk to 11 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, Nov. 28 to 30, and Friday, Dec. 14 to Thursday, Jan. 3.

Tickets available for self-guided cabin tour

Four log homes and a Presbyterian log church will be open to ticket holders for self-guided tours between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.

The tour will include a 1937 home built using logs from the 1800s, a new partial-log home, a completely renovated log home, a log home once owned by Brown County artist Marie Goth, and a 19th century log church. Homeowners will be at each location to provide history on the homes and the church.

Tickets will be available at the History Center and the Brown County Visitors Center for $10 each prior to the event. Tickets at the History Center, visitors center and log church the day of the event will cost $12. Proceeds will go to the Brown County Historical Society for programming.
