Letter: Halloween season safety tips for kids, drivers

To the editor:

To keep kids safe this Halloween, here are some tips from the Indiana State Police and the Brown County Health Department:

  • Keep costumes short so kids don’t trip and fall.
  • Try and use makeup instead of a mask that could obscure vision.
  • Make costumes light colors which are easier to see in the dark, or use reflective tape.
  • Know where your kids are going. Map out a route. Give them flashlights if they’ll be out after dark.
  • Remind kids not to go into the homes of strangers.
  • Tell kids not to eat their treats until they get home and you can check them.
  • Don’t eat opened candies, just ones that are wrapped in original wrappers.
  • Wash hands well when you get home before starting to eat candy.
  • When you are driving, be extra careful for children walking. They can dart out in front of a car without thinking. Don’t talk on a cellphone or get distracted; pay close attention! Maintain the speed limit or less, especially in town or populated areas. Keep your headlights on even if it’s not dark.

Have a safe and fun Halloween! See you on the Salt Creek Trail between 5 and 7 p.m.!
