Stop for plate light ends in arrest

BEAN BLOSSOM — A traffic stop for a license plate light that wasn’t working resulted in the arrest of a Brown County man for possessing methamphetamine and a syringe on Nov. 2.

Indiana State Police Trooper Matthew Hatchett conducted the stop just before 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Gatesville Road and State Road 135 North. The driver, Aaron Fox, 26, of North Shore Drive, told Hatchett that he was borrowing the vehicle from his friend’s mother and did not know the plate light was out. He told Hatchett he was coming from a relative’s home and was going to the Bean Blossom Trailer Court to see a girl whose last name he did not know, the affidavit states.

Hatchett wrote that Fox was a known drug user. He wrote that Fox would not make eye contact with him and continued to look nervously to his left and right, then occasionally down between the driver’s seat and console.

Fox’s hands visibly shook, causing his wallet to tremble, and he was bouncing his legs as if he could not sit still, Hatchett wrote. He repeatedly picked his wallet up, checked the inside of it and then dropped it between his legs, the report said.

Hatchett explained that Fox would be getting a warning for the infraction in attempt to calm his nerves. Fox denied having anything illegal in the car.

Hatchett determined through BMV records that the vehicle’s registration was suspended and told Fox to contact the owner or he would have to tow it. After trying several times, Fox was unable to contact the owner, so Hatchett requested a tow truck.

During an inventory of the vehicle, Hatchett found three syringes and a plastic bag containing what he believed to be methamphetamine between the center console and driver’s seat where Fox was looking earlier, the report said.

Fox was taken to the Brown County jail and the vehicle was towed.

He was charged Nov. 5 with possession of methamphetamine and unlawful possession of a syringe, both Level 6 felonies.
