SCHOOL NEWS: School board approves donation, superintendent raise, budget resolutions

The Brown County Schools Board of Trustees approved the following Dec. 20:

  • A $500 donation to Helmsburg Elementary, Sprunica Elementary, Van Buren Elementary and Brown County Intermediate schools for a total of $2,000 to support families in need for the holiday from Voland Hammond Property/Creekside Retreat.
  • A 2-percent raise for Brown County Schools Superintendent Laura Hammack, which translated to $2,500 added to her base pay. Her base pay is now $127,500.
  • Three 2019 budget resolutions which established two new funds and eliminated four funds as a result of the restructuring of school budgets at the state level. The first resolution established the new education and operation funds. The second resolution allows for the corporation treasurer to transfer the cash balance in the general fund to the new education fund on Jan. 1, 2019. The third resolution allows for the treasurer to transfer cash balances in the bus replacement, transportation and capital project funds to the new operations fund on Jan. 1, 2019.
  • Separating Brown County Schools transportation special paraprofessional bus driver Haley Downs, effective Dec. 13. This was not a termination.
  • Appointing Brown County Junior High School assistant wrestling coach David Chastain, $1,303 stipend, effective Dec. 10.
  • Appointing BCS custodian Zadie Farley, $11.50 per hour, part time with no benefits, effective Dec. 19, as a replacement for Penny McGuire.
  • Appointing Brown County High School Science Olympiad assistant Wendy Weddle, $684 stipend, effective 2018-2019 school year. This is a new position.
  • Transferring BCS Director of Maintenance Tom Ferry to BCS lead maintenance technician, effective Jan. 1, $44,164, 30 hours per week, 260 days per year.
  • Transferring BCS Lead Maintenance Technician Jimmy Jackson to BCS director of maintenance, effective Jan. 1, $55,958, 40 hours per week, 260 days per year.
