Trafficking charges filed against jail inmate

A Brown County man was charged with a Level 5 felony after staff at the Brown County jail discovered marijuana and tobacco in his cell.

On Dec. 27, Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Colton Magner was dispatched to the jail after a jailer reported seeing an object that looked like drug paraphernalia during a routine patrol of the jail.

After searching the cell belonging to Gary Roberts, 47, of State Road 46 East, staff reported finding marijuana, suspected tobacco, paraphernalia and matches. None of those items are allowed in the jail, Magner wrote.

Roberts told police he had recently served time in another jail where he did not receive enough food, so he brought a small amount of tobacco and marijuana to the jail in Brown County to be able to trade with inmates for more food if he was hungry. Roberts hid the contraband in a pair of long underwear, the affidavit states.

Roberts said that the Brown County jail serves enough food, and that if he had known that, he wouldn’t have brought in the marijuana and tobacco, the police report said.

Roberts was charged Dec. 28 with trafficking with an inmate, a Level 5 felony; trafficking with an inmate, a Class A misdemeanor; and possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor.
