Indianapolis woman charged with perjury

An Indianapolis woman has been charged with perjury for making a false statement in Brown Circuit Court.

Katrisha Christie, 32, was speaking under oath on July 10 about paying a restitution from a previous case, according to a probable cause affidavit filed Jan. 18. Christie said that a check had cleared her bank for $800 on May 15. According to her testimony, her stepfather wrote a check out to the Brown County clerk’s office. She said she placed it in the mail to the clerk’s office, but the clerk’s office never received the check, the affidavit states.

Christie’s stepfather’s and mother’s bank account records showed that a check written to Christie for $800 was signed on May 14 and cleared the bank the next day. The word “restitution” was written in the check’s memo line, according to the affidavit.

Christie had testified that her stepfather had written the check to the clerk’s office. She also testified she had placed a reference number on the check, but that was also found to be false.

Chelsea Whitehorn, an investigator for the prosecutor’s office, reported that since the check cleared on May 15, it was “highly unlikely” that mail from Indianapolis would reach Brown County in one day.

Christie was charged Jan. 18 with perjury, a Level 6 felony.

Man accused of choking relative

A Madison, Indiana man faces a misdemeanor in Brown County after police say he choked a relative at a Christmas dinner.

The victim told police that he and his sister were at their grandmother’s house when he went out to take items to his car and Casey Pickett, 40, followed him. The sister told police that Pickett was drinking his second bottle of Jameson of the night and that he got into a heated argument with her brother, a probable cause affidavit by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool states.

The victim said he was trying to get in the car when Pickett slammed the door shut and he tried to get in on the passenger side. The victim said Pickett then shoved him under the car and he tried getting to another car before Pickett chased him down and choked him from behind, the affidavit states.

The victim’s sister then came out and went running to help her brother. She pulled Pickett away so the victim could get away. She then tackled Pickett so the victim could get safely inside.

The victim and his sister then got into a car and left. They called their mother to tell her what happened. The mother reported it to the police on Dec. 24.

Pickett was charged on Jan. 23 with domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
