Man arrested for possessing syringes

Staff Reports

A Brown County man was arrested on Jan. 31 after he ran across State Road 46 East in front of a police car, then later gave the officer multiple syringes when the officer questioned him.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool was driving east on 46 East west of Hawthorne Drive when Joshua Rice, 37, of Sweetwater Trail, ran out across the highway in front of him. Rice was wearing dark clothing, Pool wrote in his report.

Pool found Rice in the Brown County IGA parking lot. When he pulled up, the officer reported seeing Rice throw a knife on the ground.

While the officer was talking to Rice, Rice was almost whispering as if someone was listening and he did not want them to hear what he said, Pool wrote. He told Pool he was walking to keep warm and was going to check out a nearby hotel, the report said.

When asked if he had any paraphernalia on him, Rice reached into his coat pocket and removed two baggies with a total of 11 syringes inside. Rice said he was a drug user, the police report said.

Rice was arrested and taken to the Brown County jail. On Feb. 1, he was charged with unlawful possession of a syringe, a Level 6 felony.
