Police: Man intentionally jumped from court stairs

The man who intentionally harmed himself by jumping off the second-floor staircase inside the Brown County Courthouse last week was there to participate in a court hearing, said Capt. Mike Moore with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department.

Because police are treating this as an attempted suicide, The Democrat is choosing to not release the man’s name.

The man was facing the possibility of serving eight years in the Indiana Department of Corrections, said Prosecutor Ted Adams. The state had asked for his previous suspended sentence to be revoked because he had been charged with misdemeanor drunken driving — which was a violation of his probation in an earlier felony case. He was at the courthouse for a change of plea hearing.

The man was not in police custody at the time, Moore said.

Shortly after 1 p.m. March 4, police and emergency responders were called to the courthouse in downtown Nashville on a report of a person with a head injury. A relative who was at the courthouse with the victim called 911, according to dispatch records.

Emergency workers took the man to the Brown County Law Enforcement Center where a landing zone had been established for a medical helicopter. He was flown to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.

The hospital would not release information about his condition to callers who did not have a password.

County officials have discussed making changes to courthouse security for years, and added a metal detector on the lower level and a security officer last year. Planning for the possibility of a situation like this had not been discussed publicly.

Moore said that since the man was not in police custody at the time of this incident, he did not think it would require any change in protocol for future hearings.

The man’s court hearings were rescheduled to June.
