Woman faces felony after police find syringes

Staff Reports

An Indianapolis woman faces a Level 6 felony in Brown County after police arrested her on a warrant and found syringes in her possession.

Police responded to a home in the 5800 block of East Shore Drive on April 11 after receiving a call about 52-year-old Jodi Broaddus being at the home. She had two warrants out for her arrest, according to a probable cause affidavit by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy William Pool.

Police led officers to the master bedroom where Broaddus was putting clothing in bags. Broaddus told the officers she knew she had a warrant and wanted to grab her belongings. After she gathered them, she was placed under arrest.

Police asked if she had anything on her that would stick them during a search and she said no, but that she had thrown syringes away in the trash can by her feet, the affidavit states. Pool reported finding two uncapped syringes, which Broaddus said she had used to inject heroin before police arrived.

Broaddus said she had used heroin because she did not want to get sick in jail. Police then went back into the home and searched the bedroom again.

Officers reported finding another uncapped syringe and two metal spoons with burn marks in the top drawer of a dresser. The caller told police that Broaddus had been standing there and shooting up before police arrived, according to the caller.

Broaddus was taken to the Brown County jail. She was charged with unlawful possession of a syringe on April 12.
