COLUMBUS — DSI has slots available for its 34th annual Golf Classic that will benefit children with disabilities.

The classic will be Wednesday, June 5 at Otter Creek Golf Course, 11522 E. 50 North in Columbus. Registration is $130 per person and $520 for a foursome.

Golfers will receive 18 holes of golf and a golf cart, a buffet lunch, on-course refreshments, a chance to win prizes, a commemorative gift and photo of each foursome, and can enter to win a 50/50 drawing.

The event is limited to 144 golfers. Last year, the Golf Classic raised $15,000 for early intervention services for children with disabilities. DSI is a nonprofit organization that provides services for children and adults in more than 50 counties in Indiana.

Umpires sought for youth baseball, softball

Brown County Parks and Recreation is now hiring umpires for the youth baseball and softball season. For more information, call the parks and rec office, 1001 Deer Run Lane, at 812-988-5522.

Boys basketball camp offered this summer

Boys entering kindergarten through eighth grade are welcome to attend summer basketball camp to work with Brown County High School basketball players.

Campers will learn new skills and drills, footwork, passing, defensive positioning and proper shot form. All campers will get a T-shirt and certificate at the end of camp and be recognized at halftime of a varsity home game next season.

Camp will take place Monday, June 24 to Thursday, June 27 for Grades K to 5.

The session for incoming kindergartners through second-graders will run from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Brown County Intermediate School gym.

The session for incoming third- through fifth-graders will run from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the high school gym.

The cost is $25 per camper, cash or check made out to Brown County Boys Basketball. Registration forms are available at local schools or by contacting Coach Josh Berning at [email protected]. Registration is preferred by Wednesday, May 29 (the last day of school); payment can be brought to the first day of camp.

Sessions for incoming sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders will be offered Monday to Friday, June 10 to 14 and Monday to Wednesday, June 17 to 19 at the high school gym between 3:30 and 5 p.m. Boys are welcome to come to any sessions they can attend. The cost is $30, payable to any school office, or $5 cash per session, brought that day.

Girls basketball, volleyball camps offered

Girls entering the second through eighth grades are welcome to participate in summer basketball and volleyball camps, receiving instruction from Brown County High School coaches and players.

Campers will learn the fundamentals and concepts of each sport from coaches Matt Roberts and Jessica Robertson. Early registrants will receive a free Lady Eagles T-shirt if registered by June 21.

The volleyball session will take place Tuesday, July 9 to Thursday, July 11. The basketball session will take place Tuesday, July 16 through Thursday, July 18.

The sessions for incoming second-graders through incoming fourth-graders will run from 5 to 6 p.m in the Brown County High School gym.

The sessions for incoming fifth-graders through incoming eighth-graders will run from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m.

The cost is $25 per camper in Grades 2 to 4, and $35 for campers in Grades 5 to 8. There are combo deals available if campers wish to participate in both camps: $45 for campers Grades 2 to 4, and $65 for campers in Grades 5 to 8.

Registration forms can be found at browncountyathletics.com, and payment is due the first day of camp.

Child care available weekdays at YMCA

The Brown County YMCA offers child care for two hours at a time while parents are in the building.

The service is free to Y members and for $2 per child for non-members. Children ages 6 months to 8 years old are welcome. Child watch hours are from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.
