Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

The club recently met at the Brown County History Center for their monthly business meeting and luncheon. The club celebrated finishing 30 identical aprons for members who wore them in the Spring Blossom Parade. During the parade, the club received the third-place ribbon.

Members will wear their aprons at the 40th annual Quilt Show to be held Friday, May 31 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, June 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $5. Children 12 and younger are admitted free. There will be 11 categories of quilted items at the show.

Members decided this year to add the jellyroll race and quilt bed turnings to this year’s show. Vendors participating in the show this year include Cotton Cottage Quilts, the Good Life, Quilting Memories, Quilts in Wood, Sew Crazy, Tree City Stitches, the Yellow Door Quilt Shop, Maggie Bags, Deborah Rubles Quilting Cutting Guide and American Garden Barn Quilts.

The Quilt Cafe will have a baked potato bar along with soups, sandwiches and sides. Homemade pies will also be available.

Bald Eagles

The Brown County Bald Eagles will host their June meeting commemorating the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 8 at the Brown County Inn.

Perhaps one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the 20th century is the disappearance of Amelia Earhart during her around-the-world record flight attempt. At the June Bald Eagles gathering, Gary Francis Quigg will be discussing his involvement with TIGHAR (The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery) in the search for an answer to this mystery.

An archaeologist, historian, museum professional, and television documentary producer, Quigg has extensive archaeological field experience, often in such extreme locations as the Newfoundland Cape Shore, Alaska’s Misty Fjords Wilderness, and the remote islands of Kirabiti, Yap, and the Solomons in the South Pacific. Gary has won awards for PBS documentaries as well as an Emmy as a freelance writer/producer. He has participated in six expeditions to the island of Nikomaroro in the South Pacific to conduct archaeological research on the disappearance of Earhart.

The Brown County Bald Eagles have been meeting twice a year for more than 25 years and are made up of military veterans and others who have an interest in aviation and aviation history.

The cost to attend is $27, cash or check collected at the door. It will include a buffet meal. Dress is casual. RSVP by Thursday, June 6 to 812-988-2377 or [email protected].

Deckard Reunion

The annual Deckard Reunion cemetery meeting took place May 19 at Deckard Cemetery with 21 attending.

Jim Ault was elected president and Jeannie Deckard will be vice president. Diana Davis-Deckard will serve as the recording secretary and Debbie Deckard as treasurer.

Norm Brennan will be the trustee. Brennan lives adjacent to the cemetery and is an honorary Deckard family member.

Two Deckard family members have passed since the meeting in 2018. Donna Watson Grubb and Ollen Henderson were remembered at the meeting.

The need for more money to cover the cost of mowing and insurance was also noted.
