It is all smiles from Shriners on the float for the Shriners Hospital, which was one of many in the Shrine Parade June 6 in downtown Nashville. Market to feature walking tacos, live music

BEAN BLOSSOM — The farmers market at St. David’s Episcopal Church will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. each Friday through Aug. 31. The church is at state roads 45 and 135 North.

Visit the market Friday, June 7 for the 5th Annual Bean Blossom Farmers Market Strawberry Festival. Enjoy shortcake, strawberries, ice cream and whipped cream, live music from Roger Grissette and Don Ford, and pulled pork from Ben Smith in the market’s café. Lemon shake-ups and other beverages will be available.

The Brown County Lions will be promoting their double value coupon books.

Local artisans will have a variety of handmade products for sale including soaps, candles, jewelry and fabric art. Donna Copeland, of Breezy Manor Farm, raises sheep and rabbits for spinning wool to create fabric art. She will bring rabbits and a spinning wheel to the market each week.

SNAP, WIC and senior farmers market vouchers are honored for eligible purchases. SNAP tokens are available in the outreach booth.

Game library available at the local Toy Chest

The Toy Chest, 125 S. Van Buren St., has created a game library that locals can use for a $10 annual membership fee.

Game library members can check out one game at the Toy Chest register. Games can be kept for a week or they can be renewed for another week. If the game is late, $1 will be charged each day up to the price of the game.

BCHS Class of ’73 reunion set for June 8

A party for the Brown County High School Class of 1973 will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 8 by the pool at the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East.

Charity fundraiser for St. Vincent De Paul

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Brown County will host a charity fundraiser in the IGA parking lot, 30 Hawthorne Drive, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. Shoppers can find household items, collectibles and treasures of all kinds.

Shriners to host downtown parade June 8

The Murat Brown County Shrine Summer Festival Parade will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8. All ages can enjoy little cars, Corvettes, clowns and a calliope. Entries in the parade will leave from Brown County High School and process down portions of Jefferson and Van Buren streets.

Firefighters will serve fish fries monthly

BEAN BLOSSOM — Fruitdale volunteer firefighters will host fish fries from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays, June 8, July 13, Aug. 24, Sep. 7 and Oct. 5 at the fire station, 5200 State Road 135 North.

Volunteers prepare the food and provide a combo plate for $9, a number of side dishes, drinks and desserts, along with hot dogs and breaded tenderloins.

Habitat for Humanity to celebrate partner family

HAMBLEN TWP. — Habitat for Humanity will celebrate its partner family home dedication on Sunday, June 9 at 3 p.m. at 7803 Brocks Lane. There will be a brief program, a tour of the home, and the opportunity to congratulate Daniel Minor and his family, the partner family for 2018.

Members of the Habitat community will also elect officers in a brief annual meeting at the event.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. Habitat volunteers build homes that are purchased by partner families through a no-interest mortgage and with sweat equity through working on their own and on other Habitat homes that are built. Habitat believes that affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities, and hopes the community will come together in celebrating the newest partner family.

Schools host free movie on childhood stress

Brown County Schools will host a free screening of the one-hour documentary, “Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope” on Monday, June 10 at the Brown County High School auditorium, 235 Schoolhouse Lane in Nashville. The movie will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Educators, parents and all those who work with children and youth are invited to attend.

The documentary looks into the science of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the treatment and prevention of toxic stress in children.

A panel discussion and Q&A will follow the documentary.

Computer basics workshop at the library

Brown County Public Library will conduct a computer basics workshop Tuesday, June 11 from 4 to 6 p.m.

“Technology changes fast,” reads the program description. “Whether you’re just getting started or want a refresher, this computer basics program will get you up and running.”

Annual report on schools, economic development

Superintendent Laura Hammack will present an annual report to the community focusing on Brown County Schools on Wednesday, June 12 at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St. in Nashville.

The Brown County Redevelopment Commission also will present its recently completed draft of the county’s economic development plan.

The meeting is expected to run from 6 to 8 p.m.

The redevelopment commission is organizing this educational series to engage the community on key issues impacting citizens. This is the second of four public meetings that will take place this year.

All community members are invited to attend and give feedback.

Creekside Retreat to host grand reopening barbecue

Brown County Community Band concerts

The Brown County Community Band will present its free annual concert at Sweetwater Beach Saturday, June 15 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Listeners can enjoy a lineup of traditional favorites, patriotic tunes, and some music from the big band era.

The band will perform a benefit concert for the Brown County Playhouse as a part of Big Band Weekend at the Playhouse Friday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $12; senior tickets are $8.

Free Dumpster Days planned for June

The Brown County Recycle Center will place Dumpsters at two locations on Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15, where any county resident can dispose of items for free.

One container will be placed at the Recycle Center at Old 46 and Greasy Creek Road; the other will be at the Sweetwater Drive entrance to Cordry Lake.

The containers could be removed early if they fill up. Keep Brown County Beautiful asks for no TV sets, tires or any electronics to be placed in the containers.

A different container will be available for TVs, computer monitors and electronics.

Tires will be collected separately on June 28 and 29.

Singing Winds Visitor Center opening soon

BELMONT — Visit T.C. Steele State Historic Site, 4220 T.C. Steele Road, Saturday, June 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. to tour the grounds, see updates to the historic buildings, and explore new offerings for kids and families, including an outdoor studio space.

No official tours will be conducted and there will be no admission fee on opening day. Staff and volunteers will be available to answer questions.

The Brown County Community Foundation (BCCF) will give its Annual Report to the Community at the Seasons Lodge and Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East, Thursday, June 20 at 6 p.m.

History programs for kids offered downtown

The Hands on History program, for children ages 8 to 12, will take place monthly on Thursdays at the Brown County History Center on the following dates: June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 29 and Oct. 24. The program enables children to engage in many of the day-to-day activities experienced by children living in pioneer times. Activities take place from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Pioneer Village and the History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

Planned topics tied to history will include hearthside cooking; dyeing yarn and weaving; flag etiquette; household chores; Hoosier inventions; wildlife; braille and sign language; the Indiana state flag, seal, song, foods and tree; and one-room schoolhouse.

SCI REMC to host children’s day camp

MARTINSVILLE — South Central Indiana REMC will offer a free day camp for students in Grades 4 to 6 at its headquarters in Martinsville on Friday, June 28.

The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities will be centered on vegetation management, power line components and safety, solar energy, fiber internet and energy efficiency. Bucket truck rides will be offered.

For children to be eligible, their parent or legal guardian must be a SCI REMC member. A reservation and signed waiver are required.

Kids on Wheels fundraiser to take place June 22

Support Kids on Wheels’ effort to build a skate park by attending a Jeep Poker Run starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 22.

Participants will drive the back roads to some of Brown County’s favorite destinations: Story Inn, Salt Creek Winery, Hernandia Establo, Bear Wallow Distillery and Hard Truth Hills.

Tickets are $35 and include poker cards and entry into all drawings, special promotions and pricing, and a T-shirt if registered by June 16. There will be prize drawings at every stop, including two admission tickets to Disney World and a $200 cash prize for the winning poker hand.

Jeepers will end the day at Hard Truth Hills, enjoying live music, free appetizers and tastings, a $10 gift card toward food purchases, a silent auction, and the announcement of the winning poker hand.

Touch-A-Truck fundraiser to help feed kids

A fundraiser for the Brown County Weekend Backpacks program will be set up in Brown County High School’s parking lot on Saturday, June 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 30 trucks will be in the lot, including fire trucks, bucket trucks, tow trucks, military trucks, race cars and many more.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome. All proceeds will benefit the Brown County Weekend Backpacks program, whose goal is to provide children with meals over the weekend, ensuring no child goes hungry.

Recycle center will take bagged trash for $2

The Brown County Recycle Center now accepts trash at its drive-through during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

Drop-off costs $2 per bag. The center offers prepaid sticker books for $10 or $20, with five or 10 yellow stickers to affix to trash bags up to 55 gallons.
