Plum Creek Road man arrested on drug-dealing charges

JACKSON TWP. — A 35-year-old Brown County man has been arrested on charges of dealing and possessing more than 100 grams of drugs after officers from multiple agencies served a warrant at his Plum Creek Road home.

The search warrant was issued July 15 for the home of Christopher James. Officers had reason to suspect he was dealing methamphetamine.

When officers arrived, James told them there were two ounces of methamphetamine upstairs. He said he would do whatever he could to assist the officers, according to a probable cause affidavit filed July 16.

In the home officers found more than 100 grams of a crystal substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, ecstasy, psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana, pills, dimethyltryptamine (a psychedelic drug), six long guns and four handguns, according to a press release from the Indiana State Police.

One of the handguns had an obliterated serial number and another was found to be stolen out of Lanesville, Indiana, according to the release.

After being read his rights, James agreed to an interview. He told police he used methamphetamine, smoked meth and also used a needle.

He told the troopers he had purchased around two ounces of meth at about $350 per ounce and that he had been dealing for about a year, according to a probable-cause affidavit filed July 16 in Brown Circuit Court.

He told officers he used the truck in his driveway to transport the meth from Indianapolis to Brown County.

James was taken to the Brown County jail where he was arrested on preliminary charges of dealing methamphetamine over 10 grams with a firearm, possession of methamphetamine over 28 grams with a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm, a Level 6 felony.

On July 16, James was formally charged with dealing methamphetamine, a Level 2 felony; possession of methamphetamine, a Level 3 felony; theft of a firearm, a Level 6 felony; possession of a Schedule V controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor; and possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor.

Brown County Prosecutor Ted Adams was at the scene and assisted in the investigation, along with troopers and detectives from the Indiana State Police Bloomington’s drug enforcement section, Bloomington district’s aggressive criminal enforcement section and the Brown County Sheriff’s Department, the press release stated.

James entered a not guilty plea during his initial hearing on July 16. A jury trial was set for Sept. 11 starting at 8 a.m..

As of July 18, James was still in the Brown County jail being held on a $75,000 bond.
