SCHOOL NEWS: Funding for athletic trainer no longer available

Brown County Schools no longer has funding for its athletic trainer job after Columbus Regional Hospital notified the district that it was withdrawing its monetary support.

Superintendent Laura Hammack reported this change to the school board on June 27.

The district’s athletic trainer, Sara Boyer is leaving the district, so CRH decided to withdrawal the funding now, she said.

Last week, Hammack said she reached out to CRH about continuing to support that job for at least the next school year as the district tries to figure out how to pay for it on its own. CRH was not able to do that, she said.

“You need an athletic trainer. There is something that happens every time,” Hammack said. “Every cross-country match, football game, she is administering care.”

Hammack said last week that she had contacted Wellness for Life, the operator of the community health clinic at the schools’ Eagle Park, to see if that company could help fund the job.

“If this option does not work out, we will have to post and hire a trainer. This is extremely disappointing because this will be a strain on our budget for which we had not planned,” Hammack said.
