CORDRY SWEETWATER — Got friends? Creativity? Spare cardboard? Plan to head to Sweetwater Lake Beach for the second annual Corrugated Chaos Cardboard Boat Regatta.

The fundraising event hosted by Brown County Parks and Recreation challenges individuals and their friends to design and build a person-powered cardboard craft, capable of traversing a 100-yard course at Sweetwater Lake.

All proceeds go toward ground upkeep and program improvements for parks and rec.

The competition is set for Saturday, Sept. 21. Boats may be registered online at bcparksrec.com or at the Brown County Parks and Recreation office, 1001 Deer Run Lane, on or before Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. No late registrations are permitted.

Entering a boat costs $10.

Sign-in begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Judging of preliminary awards begins at 10:30 a.m. The audience gets to help determine the winner of the awards for:

  • Most Creative Design — Boat with the most showmanship and creativity.
  • Team Spirit Award — Team showing the most enthusiasm; dressing up is encouraged.
  • Titanic Award — Most spectacular sinking.
  • Fastest in the County — Boat completing the course in the fastest time.

Race divisions will be based on the number of boats entered. One boat at a time will race in order to give maximum exposure to the boat and crew. Participants will be individually timed, with the fastest completion with the boat still intact taking first place.

The regatta is open to anyone willing to brave the course. The race begins at 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend as spectators.

Parks and rec program specialist Andy Rudd said about last year’s event: “It was a blast. It was probably the most fun we’ve had at one of our events.”
