Woman crashes, catches ride to hospital

A 23-year-old Bloomington woman crashed her vehicle on Clay Lick Road and caught a ride to the hospital before police arrived, a police report said.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicholson Briles responded to a slide-off in the 1100 block just after 7 a.m. Aug. 29. He found a black car on the northwest side of the road with no driver around, his report said.

Dispatch was able to use the license plate number to determine the vehicle belonged to Sarah Eads.

Briles saw a skid mark on the road and found Eads’ driver’s license in the vehicle. As Briles was waiting for a tow truck to arrive, emergency room employees from Columbus Regional Health called dispatch to report that Eads had showed up at the hospital saying she had been in a car accident, Briles’ report said.

Briles then placed a hold on the vehicle so that if Eads came to pick it up, he would be able to speak with her about what happened.

Later in the day, Eads told him she had run off the road and hit her head on the steering wheel and her airbags deployed. Eads said she needed to go to the hospital because of her head injury and she did not have a cellphone to call for help, the report states.

Eads said a woman passed the scene and told her she would give her a ride to the hospital. She said she meant to call the police to report the crash, but never had the chance to do so.

After she was released from the hospital, Eads was able to get a ride back to the county and then was able to speak with police about the crash, according to the report.

Briles said he told Eads it was important to report a crash whenever it occurs. He lifted the hold on her vehicle so that it could be released back to her.

Eads had been wearing a seat belt, the report said.
