‘Ending Well’: Church hosting conversations on death and dying

0

How to be cared for, saying goodbye and expressing gratitude are not often easy conversations to have at the end of one’s life.

Next month, Nashville United Methodist Church, 36 S. Jefferson St., will host a series, “Ending Well,” to help families discuss death and dying.

The goal of the series is to encourage families to not only talk about arrangements of health care and funerals, but also to have the important conversations while their loved ones are still living, like what they want their families to know about them as a legacy, said Mary Cartwright, pastor of the church.

A variety of topics will be discussed over four Tuesdays in October:

  • Oct. 8: “Consider the Conversation: Why talk?” A documentary will help explore end-of-life issues and why it is hard to talk about dying.
  • Oct. 15: Medical issues. Cindy Colglazier, a nurse practitioner with Southern Indiana Physicians Family and Internal Medicine, and Mary Reeder of Reid Hospital in-house counsel will present.
  • Oct. 22: Personal arrangements. Roy Glick of Barkes, Weaver and Glick Funeral Home and Lora Mount of Voeltz, Reed and Mount Law Firm will present.
  • Oct. 29: Religious faith and end-of-life care. Christina McCord of Our Hospice of South Central Indiana and pastor Mary W. Cartwright of Nashville United Methodist Church will present.

All sessions take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Nashville United Methodist Church. There is a $5 cost for the resource book.

Space is limited for the sessions; those interested can preregister at nashvilleumc.com or call the church office at 812-988-4666.
