Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

Lions club

The Brown County Lions Club board meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. Anyone interested in Lions is invited to attend. The next board meeting will be Dec. 3.

Double-value coupon books to be used at local businesses will be sold at the IGA on Saturdays, Dec. 14 and 21. Books are $10 from any Lions member, Fifth Third Bank, the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau Visitors Center, Carmel Corn Cottage, Health for “U” and the Helmsburg General Store. Funds raised from these projects support community events and programs, including the Spring Blossom Parade, Fourth of July fireworks, scholarships and local grants. Statewide organizations like Leader Dogs for the Blind and the Indiana School for the Blind also are supported.

The Brown County Lions Club meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Seasons Lodge and Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East, with a dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be Dec. 17.

Woodworkers club

The Brown County Woodworkers Club will meet Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. This is the annual “show and tell” meeting highlighting projects members have made during the year.

Widowed group

The Brown County Widowed Group will meet for lunch at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at The Seasons restaurant, 560 State Road 46 East.

Bald Eagles

The Brown County Bald Eagles will host their Pearl Harbor remembrance on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East. The meet-and-greet will start at 11 a.m. and a buffet lunch at noon. The meal costs $22, cash or check, paid at the door.

At the meeting, Retired Navy Commander Mike Stock will present what happened in July 1986, when he was a test pilot during the inflight breakup and crash of a very large experimental heavy-lift aircraft. This is the story of the project, the aircraft, the aircrew and the crash as told by the sole living survivor of that fateful day.

The Brown County Bald Eagles have been meeting twice a year around D-Day (June 6) and Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7) for more than 25 years. The group is made up of active duty military veterans and others who have an interest in aviation and aviation history. The public is invited; dress is casual.

Cemetery preservation

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St., Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 4:15 p.m.

The society is a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group. All are welcome.

Peaceful Valley Heritage

Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc., a preservation group, meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be at the Brown County Community Foundation building, 209 N. Van Buren St., on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Genealogical society

The Brown County Genealogical Society has two upcoming events:

  • Thursday, Dec. 12: Christmas party, 1 p.m. at the library. Members will bring desserts and/or finger foods. Visitors are welcome.
  • Thursday, Jan. 9: Annual membership meeting, 1 p.m. at the library. Agenda includes election of a board member, discussing ideas for upcoming meetings, sharing of research successes and “brick walls.”

Herb society

The Brown County Herb Society meets the third Monday of each month. The club will meet in the lower level at the Brown County Public Library on Monday, Dec. 16 at 3 p.m. All are welcome to join.

Book clubs

A Novel Bunch book club will meet at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. Bring any favorite book to share. If you’re interested in joining the book club but can’t attend meetings, email Diana Wright at [email protected].

The Cordry-Sweetwater Book Club is open to anyone. It meets at the Cordry-Sweetwater branch, 8751 Nineveh Road. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 6:30 p.m. This month, the discussion will be a Christmas book of your choosing. Call the CSW branch for more information at 317-933-9229.
