Volunteer firefighters responded to a fire alarm and 911 call reporting smoke in the basement of the Nashville United Methodist Church the evening of March 11.

Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department Chief Nick Kelp said firefighters discovered a furnace blower motor was the reason for the smoke. The only damage reported was to the motor, Kelp said.

The call came in just before 7 p.m. on South Jefferson Street.

The motor spread the smoke throughout the duct work.

Indiana Natural Gas also responded to shut off gas to the furnace. Firefighters opened up doors to clear the smoke and the alarm system was rest by the property manager, Kelp said.

Firefighters from Southern Brown and Fruitdale volunteer fire departments also assisted at the scene. They were all able to leave in a little over an hour.
