Letter: What’s wrong with visiting a swimming hole?

0

To the editor:

Here we are in the dog days of summer, and this year is noticeably different. The struggle to find a way to beat the heat and COVID quarantine blues reminds us to look to the past for solutions.

Head to the swimming hole for a cool dip and a deep breath of fresh air in a safe, distanced, unmasked way.

I have been enjoying the beautiful gem of a lake just down the road for over 30 years, having heard of it from an old-timer who swam and fished there as a child — good, clean summer fun!

But alas, this summer is noticeably different. Persistent pond pesterers have shown up to rob us of our joy. There seems to be some directive for conservation officers to frequently (three times this week) patrol and harass lake users. As I pulled into the lot yesterday (July 9), I witnessed the march of shame of four young people with the officer in the rear. Their faces reflected the disappointment in going from happiness and freedom to being treated like a criminal.

Really? At a time when law enforcement is being held in the spotlight, I would think this to be bad public relations. These “offenders” are responsible adults who need outdoor recreation to help calm the pressure of a stressful world. Please don’t take away this traditional restorative activity! And may I invite all to join us: Come on in, the water’s fine.
