In-person visitation resumes at nursing home

Brown County Health and Living Community has resumed in-person visitations as long as guests remain socially distanced, according to an email from parent company CarDon.

CarDon reports that in-person visitations are now allowed for family members or close friends of those staying at the facility.

Residents, according to the email, are limited to a one person visit once per day.

The visits can happen indoors or outdoors, but masks are required to be worn by both people, and six feet of distance must be between them.

Visits must be scheduled through the facility in advance and no walk-in visitations are permitted at this time, but they may be in the future, CarDon said.

“Both our residents and families have enjoyed this interaction so far,” the company said in an email response to questions.

Before this new in-person visitation system was approved, residents of Brown County Health and Living were encouraged to use technology to interact with loved ones.

“We have encouraged FaceTime, phone calls, video calls and window visits with family members and these have been very popular,” the email said.

For a period of time after the virus hit, all meals at the center were being served to residents in their rooms and all group activities were canceled. However, CarDon is now allowing residents of facilities to resume activities that involve 10 or fewer people. Communal dining with social distancing is also now offered and residents are able to go outside and get fresh air as well.

All associates at the center, according to CarDon, are required to wear N95 masks while at work and have been given cloth masks to wear outside of the facility as well. All residents are being required to wear a mask once they leave their room as well.

“We continue to monitor both residents and associates for symptoms as well as practicing strict hand hygiene and infection control protocol,” CarDon said.

According to a database of COVID-19 cases in long-term health care facilities on the Indiana State Department of Health’s website, Brown County Health and Living Community still had zero cases among its residents or staff. The data was last updated on July 27.
