Police blotter for week of Aug. 26

Police: Man tried to run woman over with van

SPEARSVILLE — Police say a 40-year-old Brown County man grabbed a senior citizen by her arms before chasing her in a van as she tried to run from him in a field.

On Aug. 7, Brown County Sheriff’s Deputies Shane Jackson and Michael Horn responded to the report of a physical assault on Hornettown Road just after 4 p.m. The victim told them that Anthony Callon had grabbed her repeatedly by her arms and cut her with the keys he had in his hands, a probable cause affidavit states.

The victim said she tried to leave by running through a field to a neighbor’s house, but Callon drove a white van through the field, trying to run her over, the report says.

Callon was close to striking the woman, but she was able to evade him.

Jackson reported seeing several bruises on the victim’s wrists and cuts on her left hand. EMS was requested to check out her injuries.

Police spoke with a witness who reported seeing the woman running through the field between two houses and Callon was chasing her with a white van. The witness said that the victim was almost struck. After the victim reached the neighbor’s house, Callon left and headed toward Spearsville Road, according to the affidavit.

Callon was found at a home in the 8500 block of Spearsville Road where he was arrested. He was taken to the hospital for clearance before being booked into the Brown County jail.

On Aug. 10, Callon was charged with domestic battery, a Level 5 felony, and criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony.

Drunk driver report results in felony charges

A 35-year-old Bloomington man faces two felonies in Brown County after police stopped the vehicle he was driving and found he had three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Gibson was patrolling in the area of State Road 135 South and State Road 46 East when dispatch reported a possible intoxicated driver westbound on 46 East coming toward him, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Gibson was able to get behind the vehicle and saw it cross the fog line, then back into the lane before nearly crossing the center line. When the vehicle began to turn into the Circle K gas station, Gibson initiated a stop in the parking lot, the affidavit states.

As Gibson approached the driver’s window, he reported smelling alcohol. The driver, Jared Smith, told Gibson he was sorry when he was asked why Gibson had pulled him over.

He initially denied drinking, but then told Gibson he had two “shooters” about three hours ago in Indianapolis.

Gibson reported that Smith’s speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and he was swaying off balance. Smith also allegedly pulled himself from the vehicle, then he staggered from and leaned against the vehicle during the stop, the probable cause affidavit states.

His blood-alcohol content tested at 0.26, more than three times the legal limit. At the hospital when Smith was being cleared to be booked in the jail, he told the doctor he had had “three or four” shooters an hour prior, which contradicted what he had initially told Gibson, according to the affidavit.

On Aug. 7, Smith was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle while intoxicated — endangering a person, both Level 6 felonies.  Smith had previously been convicted of an OWI, according to the affidavit.

Warrant search leads to multiple drug charges

A 47-year-old Brown County man is facing drug charges after police searching for him reported seeing drug paraphernalia through a bedroom window.

James Thompson was charged on Aug. 11 with possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony; possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor.

Police were at a home in the 2100 block of North Shore Drive searching for Thompson, who had an active body attachment warrant out of Bartholomew County, according to a probable cause affidavit by Det. Paul Henderson with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department.

Henderson was contacted by Deputy Josh Stargell, who reported seeing paraphernalia and a white crystalline substance that was consistent with meth while looking through a window in the home. Henderson assisted with getting a search warrant.

After the warrant was received, Henderson reported seeing the items in the bedroom along with photos of Thompson and mail in the bedroom belonging to him.

Inside the bedroom, police found multiple smoking devices with burnt marijuana and meth residue; a partially burnt marijuana cigarette; a scale; two plastic baggies with white powdery substances inside; a lid with a large amount of the white crystalline substance on it; butane torches; a half straw with white powdery residue on it; and a razor blade and remnants of a white powdery substance on a mirror that was on a dresser in the room, according to the affidavit.
