Brown County COAD’s pop-up food pantry on Aug. 27 at Van Buren Elementary School provided more than 150 households with fresh groceries. Since starting pop-up food pantries in April, Brown County COAD has seen an average of 120 families or households come through each one. Pop-up food pantry happening this week

VAN BUREN TWP. — A drive through, pop-up food pantry will be operated at Van Buren Elementary School, 4045 State Road 135 South, Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. or while supplies last.

The pantry is being offered by Brown County COAD, St. Vincent de Paul, Midwest Food Bank and the Brown County YMCA.

Therapeutic art events planned at public library

Centerstone is organizing two free therapeutic art opportunities at the Brown County Public Library this fall.

All are welcome to paint on rocks or canvas on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10:30 a.m. at the library, 205 Locust Lane. Participants are encouraged to bring their own rocks and leave them to have words added, be coated in resin and picked up later. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own canvases for a paint pour.

Community Music Fun will take place Saturday, Nov. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the library. Participants can join for an hour of drumming, music-making and songwriting. No experience is necessary. Drums will be provided or participants can bring their own.

Annual craft market event going virtual this year

The third annual Brown County Handmade Market will be a virtual live event this year, featuring handmade creations from Brown County and across the Midwest.

The Brown County Handmade Market began in 2018 and is organized by members of Parkview Church of the Nazarene, Kara Miller and Donna Edens-Magner. The sale began as a way to support Parkview church (which receives proceeds from booth rent) while providing a convenient venue for artists and a unique, family-friendly experience for shoppers.

Humane society benefit happening this weekend

The Brown County Humane Society’s Dawg Gone Walk & Fiesta will be Sunday, Oct. 11 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Deer Run Park, 1001 Deer Run Lane.

People and their pets are welcome to an afternoon of games, contests, pampering stations, information booths and shopping.

The cost is $30 per dog; humans get in free. The first 125 to register get a free goody bag.

Money raised goes directly to the feeding and care of homeless pets at the shelter.

Library has secondhand books and more available

The Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, has its Book Nook open, with a variety of used books, audio books, music on CD and DVDs for children, adults and teens.

All are welcome to browse the sidewalk carts near the entryway of the upper level of the library, or come inside and browse during the library open hours: Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Annual mega sale planned at Parkview church

Parkview Church of the Nazarene will host a Mega Rummage Sale on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Several families will be selling all kinds of items.

The sale will be in the church’s gym building at 1750 State Road 46 East.

To have a booth and sell items, email [email protected]. Booths cost $20 each and proceeds benefit Parkview Church’s Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

Parkview Church will have a “donation only” booth for gently used items to donate. All proceeds from donated items will go toward Parkview’s Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

Thrive Alliance holding virtual information session

Volunteer Advocates for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults (VASIA) help enhance an individual’s quality of life by making decisions on that person’s behalf which reflect, as much as possible, the individual’s own choices and preferences. Thrive Alliance is holding an informational session for those who may be interested in serving as volunteer advocates. A virtual session is being offered via Zoom on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 5:30 p.m.

Annual tree lighting ceremony set for November

The sixth annual Community Tree Lighting will take place on Friday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. This year’s ceremony will be a mini ceremony with lighting the tree, the History Center and the school house to kick off the holiday season.

Visitors are asked to wear masks and socially distance. The 2020 souvenir wooden nickels will be passed out next year along with the 2021 wooden nickel. The History Center will be closed during the ceremony. Recorded music will be played, but no live music, snacks or hot chocolate will be provided.

Nashville Farmers Market still open Sundays

The Nashville Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Brown County Inn parking lot, 51 State Road 46 East.

Shoppers can find seasonal produce grown by local farmers, eggs and baked goods. Local growers also offer vegetable starts for gardens, deer-resistant and native plants for landscaping, house plants, perennials and annuals to spruce up patios and porches.

Local crafters and artists share their talents in a variety of forms: Pottery, quilting, jewelry and more. Locally made goat’s milk soaps and bath and body products are also available.

Vendors are socially distanced to prevent the spread of COVID-19. All vendors wear masks and provide hand sanitizer. Shoppers are encouraged to wear face covers. The market offers free masks to those who don’t have their own.

The market doubles SNAP and WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits up to $10 per shopper per week. Stop by the information booth for details.

Local bluebird club selling nesting boxes

The Brown County Bluebird Club’s annual bluebird nest box sale is underway. Boxes are all cedar and fully assembled. One box is $15 and two boxes are $25. If interested, call Dan Sparks at 812-200-5700.
