Fall events calendar for week of Oct. 7

Hoosier National Forest staff are operating a fall photo contest until Monday, Nov. 25. Photos will be used to promote the forest. Shots can be submitted to [email protected] or mailed to Hoosier National Forest, Attn: Alexander Johnson, 248 15th St., Tell City, IN 47586. With the submitted photo, include the date the photo was taken, location of the photo, your name, category of the photo (wildlife, nature focus or recreation) and whether you would like to be contacted via email or phone in case awarded. Fall events to take place at historic site

BELMONT — “Ghost Stories Under the October Sky” will be offered at T.C. Steele State Historic Site, 4220 T.C. Steele Road, Friday, Oct. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Participants can bring a picnic supper and blanket, and bundle up for an evening of spooky storytelling by the cemetery at T.C. Steele State Historic Site. Famous and local ghost stories will be told by the Bloomington Storytellers Guild.

This program is recommended for ages 8 years and older. In case of inclement weather, the program will take place in the Singing Winds Visitor Center. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for youth ages 3 to 17 and free for members.

An interactive story time walk is set for Saturday, Oct. 24 from 2 to 3 p.m. Families can explore T.C. Steele’s color by using paint swatches. The experience will end in the classroom, creating art to take home. The event is $4 for children (free for adults with child) and 25 percent off for members.

Outdoor movie happening at Deer Run

All are welcome to a family-friendly at Deer Run Park, 1001 Deer Run Lane, on Friday, Oct. 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The movie is free and guests are encouraged to bring their own blankets, lawn chairs and pop corn.

Friendly Forest trick-or-treat starts Oct. 23

HELMSBURG — A family-friendly fundraising event is happening on two weekends in October at the Jackson Township Fire Department, 4831 Helmsburg Road.

The Friendly Forest, for all ages, will take place on Friday and Saturday evenings, Oct. 23, 25, 30 and 31. Come in a costume to trick-or-treat in the woods and enjoy snacks and drinks at the fire station. The cost is $1 per child; adults can participate for free.

State park still hosting Halloween events

Brown County State Park will celebrate Halloween in the Hills on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m.

The event includes campsite decorating and pumpkin carving contests, and a trail starting at the Nature Center with candy stations and nocturnal animal stations. There will also be stargazing and other activities.

Drive through trick-or-treat to be at music center

Brown County Parks and Recreation and the Brown County YMCA will have drive through trick-or-treating at the Brown County Music Center, 200 Maple Leaf Boulevard, on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. This is in place of the trick-or-treat trail that usually is set up on the Salt Creek Trail.

All are welcome. All social distancing protocols will be followed to distribute treats safely.

Trick-or-treating not canceled in Nashville

Nashville police will be outside their station providing traffic control on Artist Drive like normal during trick-or-treating this year. Trick-or-treating can take place in Nashville on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Some fall events canceled due to pandemic

A number of fall events in Brown County have been canceled due to COVID-19:

  • Farm Fest 2020 at Kelp’s Greenhouse
  • The Back Roads of Brown County Studio Tour. However, another studio tour, the Remnant Studio Tour, is still happening. See more information in art briefs.
