Indianapolis man flown out after camper explosion

A 61-year-old Indianapolis man was flown out by a medical helicopter on Nov. 13 after his camper exploded while he was staying in Brown County.

Around 7:30 p.m. Friday, firefighters, police and EMS were dispatched to a campground in 3600 block of Greasy Creek Road for an explosion that injured one man, according to an incident report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Stargell.

Stargell reported that the camper was completely engulfed in flames when he got there, with leaves on the ground also catching fire.

The camper owner, Terry Stinson, was found next to his vehicle away from the fire. He had “significant” burns to both of his hands and his head, Stargell wrote. Stinson also had a watch on that had  melted off his wrist, the report said.

Stinson told police he recently bought the camper and replaced the five-gallon propane tank on the tongue of it. He said he was inside the camper cooking dinner on a propane stove when the camper exploded.

Stinson said he had to fight the fire to get to the door and then fell outside, where he was able to get away from the flames, according to the report.

Stargell could not determine the make or model of the camper due to the damage, he wrote.

Stinson was flown by Lifeline from the Brown County Law Enforcement Center after he was checked out by EMS.

Firefighters with the Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department were able to quickly extinguish the fire. The Nashville Metropolitan Police Department also assisted.
